An Open Letter To My Roommate

It's not a goodbye; it's a see you later.

An Open Letter To My Roommate
Elizabeth Diaz

As a freshman rooming with someone is never easy, especially when you don't know the person. You never know who you are going to get stuck with, all these questions pop up in your head like are they messy? Will they have a boyfriend around all the time? Do they like to party? All things people worry about. For me rooming with someone for the past four years has been the easiest thing I have ever done in my life. My roommate was the puzzle piece missing in my college experience.

For knowing someone 20 minutes before we got signed up to go into a room together, it’s been an amazing experience. We have our differences, but what made this experience better was that as we went along we found things out that made us the same. We never had a screaming battle because someone wasn't being rude, we never had to worry about the noise because we respected each other’s space and time.

I write this with a heavy heart because every good thing comes to an end. I lose my roommate after this semester is over, and I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do. Who is going to handle my rants about absolutely nothing, who is going to make mac and cheese with me at ten at night. What about those days in the winter when classes get canceled and we are so bored that binge watching the Fosters is our version of a great day off. When we make random trips to the dollar store and buy whatever craft supplies we can find and come back to the room and put it all together because we have nothing else to do. Most importantly who is going to talk to me before we go to sleep flipping through Pinterest and Instagram finding the weirdest things to share with each other while we are talking about our day?

There is not enough space to write it all out, but just know that my time spent with you as a roommate was nothing short of the best four years! Although It’s been a crazy semester, we’ve both been so busy and haven’t really had a chance to do our normal fun things together, just know that this isn’t a goodbye, It’s just a see you later, and all of these memories I’ll hold on to and one day we will look back and just laugh at some of the things we have done. I got so lucky with a roommate like you, someone who would do anything for me. It’s been a crazy four years and I am so proud of everything you have accomplished and continue to accomplish, I know you’ll do great in everything you do.

Good luck with everything; I'll see you later.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
