An Open Letter To My Best Friend

You're more like a sister.

Dear Best Friend,

I met you in high school, my sophomore year and your freshman, and I fully believe that we picked each other. When I first met you I felt like I had known your forever, not just the five minutes that we were standing next to each other in our biomedical science class. We instantly clicked, and that hasn’t changed at all throughout the years we have known each other. If anything, it has just gotten that much better. Most letters like this are all about how high school friends regret having grown apart, but that’s not the case for us. I cannot tell you how grateful I am that you fell in love with Immaculata when you came to visit me and that you decided to join me here for school. We are some of the lucky ones that get to experience getting our undergraduate degrees with our best friends. That being said, I get to see you almost every day and that is one of the best things I think I could ask for. There are a couple things that I would like to say to you.

Thank you for putting up with my crazy. I know that I am a little out of my head sometimes and that you would probably like to knock me with your fist for being a weirdo. I have goofy habits and a whacked out schedule, so I greatly appreciate you not losing your mind with me. I know I have a temper at times and act a little depressed at other times, but you always know how to make me feel better.

Thank you for making me laugh like an idiot. Seriously, it makes my day more enjoyable and my face hurt from smiling too much, but I love it. The best part is that we laugh together—never at one another because that would be rude—and we have such the same sense of humor. More often than not it is stupid jokes out of the blue that do the trick, not even planned jokes. I appreciate you making light of situations that I take way too seriously with a well-timed joke.

Thank you for keeping me sane over summer vacations. One of the perks of having a best friend in college who is from the same hometown is that I have a built-in friend at home over vacations (hah!). I think that I would go insane by myself if I didn’t have you at home to keep me busy and out of my own head on days that I don’t work.

I miss you when you’re gone. You ventured off to Europe for a semester and I struggled for a little while with what to do without you in my life for a few months. I’m so incredibly happy that you enjoyed your time in Ireland and various other countries, but I missed you when you were gone. I know that we still talk and keep in touch when we are separated, but it still kind of sucks since you tend to keep me from being bored when you are around.

I will always support who you want to be and whatever you want to do. You have a great head on your shoulders and you know what is best for you, even if you do still need advice from time to time. You are your own person, so don’t ever let anyone dull your sparkle or pop your bubble.

In case you didn’t know, best friends are not even the right words to describe us. I think that sisters is a much better word. Nothing can separate us. I vow to make sure of it, so you better too. Love you, girl!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
