Dear Killer Clowns,
First of all, Why???
That why is a question that I'm sure many are asking and is pretty self-explanatory.
Secondly, why would you take the guise of a clown? Clowns are a wonderful group of people who want to share laughter and happiness in this world, so why would you want to take that and pervert it with terror and violence? Do you not understand that not only are you frightening people, but you are also potentially ruining peoples' lives? There are hundreds of people out there who earn their living by clowning at parties and hospitals, spreading joy and happiness to children, yet here you are making people less trusting of clowns and thereby ruining some people's livelihoods.
Also, why would you be doing this craziness in states that have open carry laws? On Monday, October 3, I heard countless reports of clowns on college campuses, and many of those were in Texas. Do you not understand that if you run across the wrong person, you are going to be shot? Not to mention there are already videos circulating on Twitter and Facebook of students beating clowns like you with whatever object they can do the most damage with. You are putting yourself in mortal danger for what? To incite violence? To bring fear this Halloween season? Or do you just have a death wish?
These clown sightings on campuses and in communities are becoming a widely covered news topic. BuzzFeed just recently published an article about the attack that happened here at Texas State University where a young woman was grabbed and had to fight her way out of the grip of a man dressed as a clown while she was on one of the stairwells of her apartment building.
Seven of my friends were on campuses with clown sightings that Monday night; one even had a clown in her dorm! This isn't okay and needs to be stopped and taken seriously before someone gets really hurt. Penn State had a "clown hunt" that was documented with its own Snapchat story where hundreds of students ran to where the clown was last spotted in hopes of teaching said clown a lesson. Now, as much as I love something that can bring a community together, I don't love the idea that it was the threat of violence that did it.
My hometown was one of the first cities in Texas to have a clown spotting, and, of course, it took place in the park inside my neighborhood. This is cause for serious concern for the community because there are three elementary schools and one middle school that are very close to the woods where the attack took place.
The second I heard about these sightings I texted my sister who goes to the same college as me. She's terrified of clowns and I couldn't stand to think about what would happen if she came face to face with one who would actually want to hurt her. Every friend who sent me something about a clown on campus got my "stay inside, lock your doors, have a weapon handy" speech. But here's the thing, we shouldn't have to worry about feeling unsafe in our campuses and communities, people who dress up in clown makeup for a living shouldn't have to be worried about if they are going to get hired again, and we shouldn't have to worry about being attacked by some person who isn't thinking about the consequences of posing a threat to our communities.
Please, clowns, stop this craziness before anyone else gets hurt.
Sincerely,
A Worried Citizen
