Dear Indecisive Teen,
We have all been there before, in a circumstance where we just can not make up our mind if our life depended on it. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and is generally normal. Indecisiveness can and most likely happens to everyone while growing up. You make hundreds to thousands of choices for yourself everyday. From the moment you wake up and decide what to eat for breakfast or what you wear for the day, you are choosing the best option for yourself.
Growing up today we are asked to make choices left and right that ultimately determine our future. Often it is overwhelming and extremely confusing because of the circumstances that are attached to our decision, starting junior year of high school you are asked to pick where you want to spend the next four years of your life once you graduate from high school. Do you want to stay close to home or get as far away as possible? School size, extra curricular actives, and sports all determine your ultimate decision to select your final answer. Then there is picking your major. At this point in the game it is hard to pick what you want for dinner, so how does anyone really expect you to know what you want to do with your life at this young of an age?
Endless options and an ample amount of fields to work in can leave you completely undecided, and that is okay. Being unsure and indecisive is acceptable and quite honestly, expected. Growing up calls for making the wrong decision once or twice and learning from it. You won't learn anything from picking the safe option every time. Dare to be different and step outside of your comfort zone when you are completely unsure. Challenge yourself and others to learn together. When you are indecisive and vulnerable you gain experience and learn about yourself — not to mention the elaborate stories you will get to tell later on down the road, when the damage is done. Indecisiveness is a part of your life that gives you the option to do what you want and be who you want. It is okay to not know what you want to do right away. Everyone deals with uncertainty in different ways and copes with it in the way that seems most comfortable to their lifestyle.
So, next time you can't make a decision about a small or large choice just remember that you are not alone. What is meant to be, will be. Slow down and enjoy the ride as you grow and determine your future for yourself at your own speed. Consider weighing the options but ultimately always follow your heart. Indecisiveness is real, friends can help.
Sincerely,
A Fellow Indecisive Teen
