Congratulations! You did what you always knew you could. You are about to enter what is honestly the best four years of your life. Whoever told you that high school was the best four years, lied. In college you really find out who you truly are. Stupid rumors and people who do not matter do not follow you around each and every day. I know how scared you are thinking about all of the friends you are leaving; but I also know how excited you are to begin this new chapter in your life. That being said, here is some advice:
You have the rest of your life to work every day; take this time to spend days with your friends who you will no longer see every day like in high school. Take a few beach trips this summer, have movie night once a week, spend as much time as you can together.
Remember that not all relationships/friendships will last through college, and that’s okay. I only talk to about three people from high school and I honestly wouldn’t change that. They are my closest friends. You start to see peoples’ true colors after high school. It is easy to recognize the people who have yet to grow out of their high school stage. It’s hard to see that some of those people used to be your closest friends but sometimes you need to let go and move on with your life because those are the types of people who will only hold you back; not move you forward.
It is hard when you notice the distance in a friendship and you can see the relationship you’ve had for the last four years slip away but at the end of the day it takes two to make any relationship work. If that other person is not showing interest in your life no matter how many times you’ve reached out, maybe it is a good thing to move on and let them go. A real friend would stick around; not only when it’s convenient for them.
Say yes to every opportunity and everything you can. You will soon regret the times you said “no” or “maybe”. Whether it is for job experience or going to a concert; like Nike just do it.
Take lots of pictures. You’re going to want to remember the last summer spent with your friends. Some of these people you will never see again. And again, that’s okay. The pictures help on the days you miss them and the memories you shared.
Remember, college is not like high school in anyway. No one knows who you are. If you didn’t like who you were in high school and thought you could have always been a better person; you can change. You can go from the shy girl in the back of the classroom to the loud one cheering at every sports game. You can be whoever you choose to be.
At the end of the day it is a scary transition. This is the next big step in your life. High school seems so little compared to college. Always remember who you are. Don’t be scared. People will like you and you are about to meet some of the most incredible people ever. There is a reason some of those from high school do not make it to your future. I know it hurts but you will get through. Just remember, everything is going to be okay.
