An Open Letter To My Older Siblings

Life is a scary thing. It comes in waves of ups and downs, lefts and rights, twists and flips. Most of the time, you feel like you never quite know just where to go or what to do. You could use a little "pick me up" or some "much needed assistance". That's what your older siblings are for. They can be a major pain 99% of the time, but the 1% that they aren't, they always know just how to help because they've already encountered what you're going through and they got help from someone else. Whether it be a breakup, struggling with school, or just not knowing where your life is heading, your brothers and sisters are always a good place to go.

I know I can say that my siblings have helped me through everything. At the moment, I always thought "I don't need them. I can do it on my own." But as I looked back, I soon realized that their help could've been vital in my decision making. Here are just a few things I would like to thank my siblings for, and you should do the same:

1. Thank you for never giving up on me, even when I had given up on myself

There were times that I felt like I wasn't good for anything, and you showed me differently. You showed me that if I just kept pushing, I'd find my way out. I'd figure it all out and I would do something with my life. In those moments, you showed me that you care, and that's a feeling I wouldn't trade for anything.

2. Thank you for being proud of me

Whether it was an A on the test, a new job, winning a championship, or just doing something good at home, you've always been there to congratulate me and to let me know I was doing something right. It may not have been too often, but you never failed to let me know that you were proud to have me as a little brother.

3. Thank you for picking on me growing up

I hated you for it then, but I am forever grateful for it now. I realize now that you were just preparing me for the dark and scary place they call the world. You enjoyed making me upset or pushing all of my buttons, and I always gave you the exact reaction you were looking for. I may have been an easy target, but it made stronger and it made me a better person.

4. Thank you for getting me out of the house and showing me the good spots

Now that I'm in college, I understand the whole "hangout scene" a little better. But when my brother first started college, I always said, "I can't wait until I get older and he can show me all the places he and his friends go". Now, those spots are something that we share together and it's something that I will cherish forever.

5. Thank you for being my best friend

I know life with me was never the easiest, and that feeling is mutual, but I just want to say thank you for always hanging out with me or helping me with homework. It's those little moments that I will always have, and I could never ask for a better sibling. Even though I may say I hate you, I will always love you. Because that's what family is. A love/hate relationship.

My siblings are one of the very many blessings in my life, and they're some of the most important. Their knowledge and wisdom about life is something that you can't put a price on and is something I will one day teach to my own children. If you don't feel the same way about your siblings as I do, maybe this can help. Love your brothers and sisters, because there may come a day where they're all you have left.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
