An Open Letter To Donald Trump

Mr. Trump,

I don’t know you personally and you definitely don’t me and yet, we judge one another. I judge you based on what you have to say and you judge me based on where I come from. Doesn’t that last picture seem wrong to you? The part where you judge me? You see, I have a reason to judge your character because:

1. You are public speaker and yet what you say half the time is utter trash.

2. You encourage those with you to hate those who are not of their kind.

3. You act like a child and throw tantrums when someone tries to challenge something you said rather than rebuttal with a reasonable response.

Why is that you judge me and so many others based on where they come from? What will you think of me when you see that I am a Mexican American? I suppose you will assume:

  1. Both my parents are immigrants and by association I should be deported to Mexico along with them.
  2. My family comes from a long line of criminals and the cause crimes in America.
  3. My first language is as you say “Mexican” and not English.

I’m writing this open letter to you so that you can understand who I am. I am a Mexican American. I come from two amazing parents: a Mexican American mother born here in California and a Mexican father born in Jalisco, Mexico. My father has been an American citizen of this amazing country for more than 10 years. They are my pride and joy and they don’t deserve to be lumped into a stereotype that you have presented for Mexicans. To be honest, NO ONE deserves to be lumped into a such a derogatory stereotype, whether they’re Latin, Black, Muslim, etc.

I do not come from a long line of criminals or rapists like you suggested since I am Mexican. I come from a long line of Mexicans who work hard, sacrifice everything for their families, and make sure generations after them will be able to live a life they didn’t have the privilege of living. I want you to know this because these are the kind of Mexicans living in America. I understand that there are bad people in this world but it isn’t because of their ethnicity, it’s because of bad choices they made...kind of like you are.

By making these statements not only about Latino(a)s but as well as other races, you are deeming yourself as a bad person that no one can trust and respect. How can we be expected to see you as our President, the person who is supposed to lead us in the right direction, when you are obviously going in the wrong direction. With all due respect, Latino(a)s make up a large population of this nation and we cannot allow someone who bashes Americans of different ethnic groups to become our next president.

You might say "Latinos love Donald Trump" and I'm sure you have reason to believe so, since an aunt of mine who is Mexican believes every word that comes out of your mouth. It's a shame that she feels this strongly about you and I only wish that she felt as strong about her heritage. Most Latino(a)s are not my aunt, though. Most of us love who we are and come from whether it's from Mexico or America and we cannot stand with someone who is so against us.

On a final note, I have seen what a good leader acts like and I'm afraid you don't fit the bill. Here are some inspiring words from our first lady Michelle Obama that you and your supporters should read and think about:

First Lady Michelle Obama at City College of New York during her inspiring commencement speech.

"Here in America, we don’t let our differences tear us apart. Not here. Because we know that our greatness comes when we appreciate each other’s strengths, when we learn from each other, when we lean on each other...We don’t build up walls to keep people out because we know that our greatness has always depended on contributions from people who were born elsewhere but sought out this country and made it their home."

Sincerely,

A Mexican-American.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
