When I decided to go Greek, I did it for a lot of reasons: friends, having a family away from home, the academic support, the cool T-shirts, the list goes on. I knew that Greeks eat meals with everyone during the week, but I didn’t know how wonderful the meal plan was. Only when I officially made the switch to the Greek meal plan and began to enjoy how fantastic it is did I realize that Greek meal plans may just be the greatest thing ever.
First off, the food is delicious – it's like a tidal wave of flavor in my mouth. Freshly prepared by our house’s personal chef, I can always count on my meal being warm, fully-cooked, and having rich flavor. There’s also no concern for allergies or intolerances because our chef has a list with everyone’s allergies and makes sure there is food in the back for those of us who can’t eat the normal meal. And if I simply don’t wish to eat what is being provided, there’s always the salad bar.
On the weekends, when I am forced to use one of my five swipes for the dining hall or actually pay for food, I cringe. The dining hall, with its greasy pizza and mystery meats, fills me with dread and anxiety as I attempt to force myself to eat something other than the greasy pizza (which is the only thing relatively edible) and find a seat in the crowded building. Yes, I am aware most people utilize the dining halls for their everyday meals, but they have not been exposed to the glory of the Greek meal plan. Yes, I could just go out to eat every time, but then how would I pay for the previously mentioned cool T-shirts?
Beyond the food itself, my Greek meal plan allows me to see my sisters all the time. If I’m really busy and don’t have time to socialize during the week, I can always count on meal time to allow me to catch up with my friends, as well as let me connect to other sisters who I may not be that close to. The dining hall does not have the same kind of intimacy that the dining room at the house does.
Now, if anyone asks why they should go Greek, I tell them about the food. Because, of all the benefits I’ve gotten from going Greek (other than my best friends), the food has to be the best.
