When “The Conjuring 2” first came out in theaters, I saw several posts pointing at how scary the film was. As someone who doesn’t get scared easily, I was skeptical about whether these rumors were true. The more and more I searched online, the more reviews I saw saying the movie was scary, and I honestly did not see any saying the opposite. Since I don’t get scared easily, I typically don’t listen to any of the reviews I see online. Previously, I had seen scary reviews about “The Woman in Black” and I thought that movie was not scary at all.
I’m not going to lie, this made me really excited. It’s been years since I’ve seen a movie that scared me. The last movie that I can remember freaking me out was “The Orphan,” only because the idea of a 37 year old looking 12 was creepy enough. I mean, come on. Either way, I was very excited to see “The Conjuring 2,” luckily, some friends of mine wanted to see it as well so we set out to watch it.
Upon arrival, I was rather anxious to see what awaited me. As the film began I was met with a giant horror movie turn off. Movies that are labeled “based on a true story,” in my opinion, usually suck. I decided to give it a try anyways and continued to watch the movie.
At first, the movie starts rather slow. Super slow…
I remember watching the first hour of this film and just thinking about how slow the plot was. I usually like movies that build up to the plot but this one, in my opinion, was unnecessarily slow, especially for a horror movie. There was a lot of scenes that in my opinion could have been cut and information that wasn’t necessary to the film’s success.
Besides the slow plot, I have to say that the special effects in the movie were an absolute bore. In one scene of the movie you have something that is referred to as the “Crooked Man.” Now this character had serious potential. It was a lanky, scary man that could be enough to give you nightmares for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, the special effects made this potentially scary character seem like someone literally took a character from SpongeBob and just randomly threw it into the movie. The special effects were definitely the scariest part of the film. I saw better effects in “The Lord of the Rings,” but then again, that movie was awesome.
Now let’s talk about the ending. If we go back to “The Conjuring,” the first movie, the ending kind of made you wait for a jump scare. Reaching ending, my friends and I sat in our seats waiting for something freaky to happen but nothing came. The movie ended in slow dancing and Elvis Presley, making it seem more like a romance movie than a horror movie.
Now that I’ve watched the film I just have to say that I rate this movie a big 3/10. This movie had the potential to be scary but it unfortunately did not happen. But you don’t have to take my review to heart. As I’ve said before, I don’t get scared easily and I’ve seen almost every scary movie out there. I’ve seen the “Exorcist,” and every “Halloween” movie under the sun. “The Conjuring 2” did not live up to all the hype I saw and I would definitely not pay another $9 to see it, but I might pay the $2 to see it when it’s on RedBox.
