The first dog café in the U.S. opened in Los Angeles on April 7th, and if I were a resident of the area, my reservation would already be booked to play with these adorable animals. With the simple title The Dog Café, the place fosters many dogs that were close to being euthanized by nearby L.A. shelters because they have been at the shelters for a long time without being adopted. A lot of these dogs have behavioral or developmental problems that have prevented them from finding loving families willing to take them in, but from the looks of this Buzzfeed video the group is nothing but a bunch of cuddly, adorable pups.
The Dog Café charges $10 for one drink and 55 minutes of playtime with the pups. The purpose of the café is to establish an inviting atmosphere where people can pet dogs and the dogs can receive love—sounds mutually beneficial, right? But the Dog Café is more than a place to have tea time with these little balls of fluff. nNot just so you can look at their cute faces, but also because The cafe serves as a point of adoption for these animals that have lived in shelters for long periods of time, and Its website gives backgrounds on all of their furry inhabitants so you can learn a little more about them. In a lot of cases, these animals haven’t been properly loved and cared for by previous owners or have been stuck in shelters for most of their lives. The only dog not up for adoption is Sharkie, the “resident mascot” and dog of the owner, Sarah Wolfgang, who has had a lot of experience trying to find new homes for rescue dogs.
Even if you don’t want to commit to adopting a dog, you can apply to foster a dog from the café and take care of the animal outside of café hours, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Through and through, the dog café commits itself to dogs who deserve better lives. They even serve fair trade, organic beans from Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co., an organization that is committed to supporting no-kill rescue organizations. The café offers coffee and espresso drinks as well as lemonade and iced tea.
I don’t live near Los Angeles, or even anywhere near California, but one dog café popping up in America could be the start of a puppy revolution! Many dog cafes already exist in South Korea: Bau House Café, Sunnyne Dog café. And there’s a husky café in Malaysia as well as a café in Thailand full of Shiba Inus, huskies and malamutes. But for America, this is a canine first.
Many cat cafes (and even one hedgehog café) exist all over the world, including Cat Town Café in Oakland, Meow Parlor in New York, Lady Dinah’s cat emporium in London, and La Gatoteca in Madrid. The first cat cafe, now named Cafe Dog and Cats, opened in Taiwan in 1998. The trend then expanded to Japan because Japanese Businessmen would go pet furry felines in order to de-stress. And who blames them? Cats are adorable! But dog cafes are still a bit of a scarcity, and I’m sure the dog lovers of the world want to change that. I would love to grab a cup of Joe and spend time with furry, playful animals after a long day of work (because dogs are better than humans anyway, right?).
