The creative hashtags that develop and trend on Twitter never cease to amaze me. One of the latest trends was the use of the hashtag #memehistory that used familiar gifs and memes to summarize historical events. For those who missed out on the hashtag here is how the hashtag depicted U.S. history.
1. The first historical event on America's agenda was Christopher Columbus discovering America in 1492. However, we know by now that this common historical story isn't as black and white as it seems.
2. Of course, you can't mention Columbus without mentioning the Pilgrims that eventually followed his path to the New World. The Pilgrims had a rough time adjusting to America and were able to to survive with the help of the indigenous Native Americans. Eventually, they celebrated America’s first Thanksgiving together, and let's just say life was never the same for Native Americans.
3. Fast forward three centuries to the 1770s during the American Revolution. During this time Americans fought the British and were able to gain their freedom.
4. What better way to celebrate your new independence than to get an amazing discount on well needed land.
There were also other ways to acquire land.
5. Once Americans became free and began settling into their place in the world, the next task was to free the slaves. The topic of abolition completely divided the nation and is marked by the Civil War that lasted from 1861-1865.
6. If you haven't noticed, wars became unavoidable for the nation.
7. Times of war also brought extreme conditions to the nation, and in between the World Wars, America saw a time of major growth known as the Roaring Twenties. This all came to an end in the next decade when Americans experienced the Great Depression.
8. When WWII ended, the word "war" took on a whole new meaning as America and the USSR took part in an indirect passive aggressive war known as the Cold War. The two super powers boasted their technology that brought many advances in both science and warfare.
9. We can't forget the fight back home on American soil as blacks fought for social justice and equality during the Civil Rights Movement:
10. Next, came the Vietnam War, which lasted about two decades and had a very unfavorable outcome for the country.
11. Now to more modern times, where the country saw its first Black president in 2008.
This will be President Barack Obama's last year in office after two terms, and based on the way the elections look so far, there will probably be a lot more memes to come.
