America Is Not The Greatest Country In The World

When were we ever great?

America Is Not The Greatest Country In The World
Cameron Hogan

In 1836, on the Trail of Tears, over 100,000 Indians were forced out of their homes, which does not include the 4,000 and countless more Indians that were killed in the process. Whose hands was their blood on? Americans. You must think, "Wait, America has done countless good for the world!" This is true. But that does not make a country great. If a kid is bullied for years, and then the bully helps the kid once, that does not make the bully a good person. Furthermore, the kid will not immediately trust that bully. America is first in so many things actually! Allow me to tell you!

First in incarceration (710 Americans are imprisoned per every 100,000 residents. The average for most nations are 115).

First in the super rich.

13th in disapproval of marital infidelity.

24th in literacy.

27th in leisure and personal care (14.27 hours a day on personal care and leisure).

134th in prevalence of slavery (59,644 enslaved people in America).

Ninth in rape.

First in total crimes.

First in capital punishment.

First in friendly fire in the Gulf War.

Ninth in civilian deaths in World War I.

First in school shootings

I'm not anti-American or anything, but our racism rating is still very high. I don't care if you're a Republican or a Democrat. Hell, I don't even care if you're a gay-hating-confederate-flag-southern-Jesus-lover. Look around you, look how many countries have freedom. In 2015, 191 countries have basic human rights and freedoms. America is rated 20th in total freedom. In 2015, Hong Kong was rated in the top. A Libertarian once said " America was never yours." This is very true, we stole this country and murdered and killed so many people just to have a part of this land. Then, after that, we still killed even more people. America is not the greatest country in the world. It never was. We are one of the newest countries in the world. We aren't something special, we aren't some overbearing all-powerful God. We are not a Christian nation. We are just a normal new country. Nothing too great. But if we continue to believe we are the greatest there is, then we will be less.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
