An AMDA Students Guide To 3rd Semester: Week 1

Oh, third semester, dreaded by every AMDA student the second they finish orientation. The rumors spread about teachers and assignments, and the first and second semester students are told constantly by the 3rd semesters to enjoy their time because third semester is hell. It's been one week of third semester, and I thought I would start a little guide to third semester as I see and experience it. Hopefully it will help anyone who took the summer off when they return this fall, or who are still in their glory days of first and second semester. Keep in mind, everyone's schedule is different and every teacher is different. So my experience may not be the same as yours or anyone else's for that matter. But I have a few tips for surviving week one.

1. It's OK To Be Nervous

Everyone is just as worried as you are. New groups, new teachers, new classes and opportunities--we've all been warned that this semester is the hardest one yet, so it only makes sense that we're terrified. Your feelings are totally valid, just make sure to hide them when necessary.

2. Maybe You Were In A Certain Level Dance Last Semester, But Nothing Is Guaranteed

Dance placements may be short this semester, but that doesn't mean they are any less intense. No dance levels are guaranteed. Even the top level. This applies to any semester, really, but it is specifically important to remember this semester. The teachers even make a little speech about it. So it has to be important.

3. Things Move Very Quickly

Within my group's first musical theatre class, we were given and had gone over paperwork, all sang a full song for our teacher, and were assigned our first song. We also have monologues to memorize and plenty of things to read. Be prepared for things to move quickly. 3rd semester waits for no one.

4. Remember That You Were A First Semester Not Long Ago

Be nice to first and second semesters. You may have been here a little longer, but that doesn't give you a right to be rude! Help them out and give them some tips -- this isn't high school. Make friends, and savor every moment. Time flies!

5. Get Enough Sleep

You're going to have more work and stress than you think, even in the first week. Do your work and manage your time. Eat enough, get some sleep, and make sure to take care of yourself. Placements are stressful and classes are a lot, as is adjusting to a new group of people. Keep your head on straight and you're golden.

6. Enjoy It

\

Lastly, make sure to be completely immersed in what you're doing, but make time to explore the city, see shows, and hang out with friends. Before we know it, we'll be auditioning and working, so take the time to enjoy every minute you have to enjoy this beautiful city that we all get to call home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
