To the girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and tends to open up to anyone and everyone, this one is for you. I’m only 18 years old, so I’m not the wisest human being you’ll ever hear from; but I have been around long enough to offer a few pieces of advice from my past experiences.
By only being 18 years old, I haven’t experienced much heartbreak. From the relationships I’ve been through and feelings I’ve developed for particular individuals in the past, I have probably cried more than I should have based on having a fragile heart. Now, I don’t believe I cried so much for so long over the termination of a relationship, but more for the place I kept finding myself in time after time after that chapter in my life had closed.
Being one with an open heart causes you to be easily persuaded and transformed into a person your partner wants you to be rather than the unique individual you are. You believe you’re in love and are so captivated by the attention of another human that you forget the importance of your own actions and feelings. You begin making decisions based on what makes others satisfied rather than putting your needs and ambitions first. Eventually, as time goes on, you start to lose yourself. Between relationships, you work so hard to build yourself up again as an individual only to make the same mistakes habitually in the next relationship.
I wanted to put these thoughts out there for the girl who keeps losing herself trying to make others happy. The day is eventually going to come where you’re not going to feel pressure to constantly change or make someone else happy; you’re going to find your person who loves you for the ambitious human being that you are. They are going to love your natural beauty. They are going to love you for your unique skills. They are going to love you for your obnoxious laugh. They are going to love you for your desire to chase after every dream you’ve ever had because you believe it is possible. They are going to love you for you.
But until that day rolls around, it is imperative to always remember to love you first. Do everything in your power to strengthen your happiness, your heart, and your health while you can. Take every opportunity you can in order to globalize and educate yourself as an individual: try new foods, smile at unfamiliar faces, and travel to unique places. Wake up and feel the power and positivity that lies within you to make each day individually unique, just as you are. Do not let anyone persuade you to be anything that you are not. You were born the way you are because there is only one version of you. Live freely, live passionately, and always remember to love yourself first.
