This was a desperate time calling for desperate measures. If we had any hope of completing everything before 8am the next morning we had only one choice...to pull an all-nighter. If you've ever wondered about the thought process that goes behind pulling an all-nighter, this is a collection of 100% actual quotes and experiences (in poetry, of course, for dramatic effect) for surviving the attempt of our first college all-nighter.
"'Twas the night before our 8am class, and four friends gathered round.
Our projects were not done and the assignment clock was counting down.
Midnight struck us with surprise as curfew locked us in our hall,
But we still hadn't finished our homework...that was the worst news of all.
1 am was nearing, we cried, "We aren't tired yet!"
"At this rate, we'll be up the entire night without a sweat!"
2 am transitioned quickly and we started to need a fix.
"What time does Starbucks open? Is it 5 or is it 6?"
Not long after 2:30, everything left us in awe.
"Is that a water purifier? That's the coolest thing I ever saw!"
2:45 am and the call of frustration started to ring,
"I'm taking off my bra, this is the most uncomfortable thing!"
Then came the judgmental snapchats, "Are you guys still awake?"
"What does it matter to you! We have a lot on our plate!"
2:55 and the tiredness really started to show.
"Can I take a nap?" and the whole room shouted, "no!"
3 am "...and I'm going to bed, don't make me feel like it's a sin!"
3:05 "Oh I still have so much to do, nevermind, I'm back in."
Shortly after came 3:30, "Can I use your shower?"
"My roommate is asleep and it's a far way to that bathroom tower."
4am the work was finished, and the victory troops came marching through,
"Well now that the work is done...I know what we get to do!"
That hour our group split, each in two groups of two.
Two went to bed, and the others said "only a power nap will do!"
The two girls who went to sleep at 4 made it to class at 8 with no harm.
The girl who tried to stay up all night overslept all her alarms.
So now I leave you with a warning: beware of staying up all night.
Sometimes the ones who admit their weaknesses are the ones who win the fight."
As much as we freshmen in college try to convince ourselves we are able to manage our time, once in a while we are humbled down to the rude awakening of an assignment that has us in way over our heads. In this case, we thought we had allowed enough time for 30 pages of reading, 2 paragraph responses, and a "10 Things" presentation to prepare for, but, as expected, we were wrong. If you're reading this...don't make our mistakes. Plan ahead.
"For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
Luke 14:28-30
