Working at the Student Rec Center is definitely one of the coolest things about being at the University of Toledo. It's a nice sized facility: with three pools, sauna, indoor track, four basketball courts, and several weight and workout rooms. The best thing about working at the Rec Center is getting to walk through and see all the people. No one goes to the Rec Center to get stressed out. Everyone is going to relieve stress and achieve some kind of goal. To me, that's awesome. I personally am a lifeguard at the Rec Center. The job has its ups and downs.
1. Pay Rate
All lifeguards get paid $10 an hour. A nice salary for stressed-out college students. All for staring at a pool and cleaning it up now and then.
2. Flexible hours
At max, you are only allowed to work 20 hours a week. This has its ups and downs. The good thing is that I will never be overloaded. 20 hours a week is the perfect amount to work and get all my schoolwork done, leaving time to work out and go to other meetings. The bad thing about this is at max, I'm only going to make $200 a week. Still, it's good for the groceries.
3. The Changes
Last semester, there was some turmoil in the pool. Without getting into too much detail, the situation is a lot better now, and anyone who worked there before would agree that lifeguards get the best treatment they have ever gotten at the pool.
I am not just advertising for the pool, though. I am advertising for the whole Rec Center. It is a wonderful place to go. Whether you are working out, working for money, or meeting new friends, it's my favorite building on campus. The only thing that would make it better is a dining hall. Or at least a snack bar.
