The media industry is all about getting good ratings. So to get good ratings, how should the media go about it? Tell us what we want to hear or what we need to hear.
Each day, pop culture is a top headline, or eight, in the media. What a Kardashian wore, who got divorced, and which basketball star has a cute dog, are the types of headlines now plastered across all platforms of media. But should we be hearing this, instead of news like poverty, starvation, and diseases across the world? Why are we being fed pop culture more than news?
This is strictly an opinion article because this topic strikes me on many levels. First, I want to know who decided that knowing more about which celebrity is getting engaged is more important than knowing about the poverty rates across the world? I know that if I want to learn more about global issues I have to go find it, the statistics aren’t pushed to me. And who agreed with that person?
Next, why did it work? Americans eat up celebrity gossip, they love it. Why doesn’t most of our society feel the same need I do to hear the real news. This world is huge and full of all sorts of information. Why do people love to hear about other people’s lives instead of environmental issues and scientific discoveries?
Finally, I ask myself why am I surprised? No one wants to be smothered with bad news. Everyone needs good news in their life. I understand completely that pop culture is nice to hear. I just don’t want to hear it all the time. Like I said there’s so much information that could be pushed our way. Shouldn’t something give?
