Amy Hoffman

If you had to explain yourself to someone new in 20 words or less, what would you say?

I am a mother, wife, writer, baker, geek, ren faire working, daycare employee, bohemian, hippie, musical theater loving, lovable soul.

Why did you start writing for Odyssey?

I saw the articles that my friend had been writing and publishing and I thought I would give it a shot. I needed something that I could do to express myself and set my inner writer free. I have always valued the written word and have always found it easier to express myself with writing than speaking.

What would you tell someone who is interested in writing for Odyssey? Any words of wisdom you have? Any warnings?

I would tell them that it is worth it. It is a great way to be able to right about things that are important to you and share it with the world.

What’s your favorite article that you’ve had published?

My favorite so far is my most recent article, about how there isn't as much magic left in the world for our youth to believe in.

Would you ever let someone in your life design a tattoo for you, and would you get the tattoo done without knowing what it was? If so, who and why? If not, why?

It would depend on who it was. I think I would allow someone close to me that knows me really well. I have several tattoos, and I mean worst case scenario I could always get it covered up with another one if it was really bad. I'd like to think, though, that no one close enough to me to be allowed to design a tattoo for me would make a bad choice in designing it... at least that would be my hope...

Which TV show or movie cast do you wish you could be a part of?

Supernatural. Hands down. Sexy car. Sexy men. Supernatural creatures and so much other amazing stuff. The second choice, though, would be Game of Thrones, because I love Renaissance type settings (hence working seasonally at the Ren Faire) but, I feel like there's a greater chance of an untimely death...

If you could live in any time period, when would you choose? Why?

The geek in me says either Renaissance or Victorian era. But the tech geek in me says the future... I'm also a fan of the 80's.. the 80's had good music.

Which fashion trend of the past or present makes you cringe the most? Which one do you wish stayed around or became more popular?

I am so glad that polyester pants and dresses aren't really a thing anymore.. yuck. However, I am a huge fan of the neon colors of the 80's, and I really miss the whole grunge and punk stuff from the 80's and 90's. I miss my 60" round JNCO jeans too. And wearing overalls over a short shirt.

Would your five-year-old self be happy with your current career choice? Or did you have a different idea of what you wanted to do when you were younger?

Oh heck no. My 5-year-old self would be so mad. My 5-year-old self very clearly said she wanted to be a princess when she grew up. Later on in life, that evolved to me wanting to be a music teacher... now I'm looking at becoming a pastry chef. Needless to say, things changed a bit.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year?

I'll be working my way through school to become a pastry chef this year. I look forward to finally completing school for something and starting my career. I've tried to go back to school several times and have had some commitment issues with school, but this time, I'm ready, and I can't wait. Meanwhile, my family and friends can't wait to eat baked goods.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
