Body shaming has sadly become very common in today's society, and this year for the 2016 Olympics one athlete was the target to yet another twitter body shame trend. Alexa Moreno is a 22-year-old gymnast representing Mexico in this years Olympics. Alexa is a 4 foot 10 inch athlete that weighs just 99 pounds and is competing in one of the worlds most prestigious athletic competitions, yet to some her body just isn't up to par.
Some took to twitter talk about Alexa, but not for her gymnastics routine but to compare her to a pig and label her fat.
In this tweet that was later deleted a man stated that this photo shows Alexa Moreno after her gymnastics routine.
Then came this tweet suggesting that Alexa has the body of two gymnast put together and that a diet prior to the Olympics would have been good.
The saddest thing about this whole thing is that this 22-year-old is simply not any regular young woman. She is an Olympic athlete that has worked hard to get to where she is. Alexa Moreno also only weighs 99 pounds, but for some reason she is still being called fat.
As a society we need to ask ourselves is this OK? Although there are many people that stood up for Alexa it still blows my mind that even an Olympic gymnast is being criticized for her body.
We have been told for years that athletes are fit and have the perfect body, but the minute one athlete has curves they're pigs and they're fat. It just doesn't make any sense that people can criticize an athlete or anyone for that matter just because they don't like the way their body looks. Someone's body isn't to be criticized because it is not what we as a society are use to seeing. Gymnast are typically small and petite, but who's to say it has to be that way. Alexa Moreno is a prime example of why so many young people are hurting themselves in order to have an ideal body. If even an athlete doesn't have a body that's "up to standards" then how do we expect future generations to be confident with the way they look. More importantly shouldn't we be focused on how good of a gymnast she is and not the curves on her body.
Believe it or not their was some good that came from this. Many took to twitter to defend Alexa showing that their s still good in the world.
Athlete, model, celebrity, or anyone in this world doesn't deserve to be ashamed of their body. Your body is your body and you should be happy with what you have because it isn't anyone's right to say you're too fat or too skinny when you're perfectly fine.
