Justin Bieber has always been a star constantly in the spotlight ever since he released his first hit single, "One Time," in 2009. The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top 100 chart toward the end of the year, causing Bieber to become the pre-teen heartthrob of elementary and middle schoolers across the nation.
I have never been a huge Justin Bieber fan -- not even during the middle school “Belieber” era. I have always loved Taylor Swift and One Direction, but for some reason I could just never get into the Justin Bieber craze -- maybe because of his notorious presence in the tabloids or, frankly, just not enjoying his music. However, I am starting to change my opinion of him and his music because of the release of his new album, "Purpose." The album includes many quotes and voice recordings from the artist talking about how he knows he has lost his way in the past and is learning everyday on how to improve. This shows a lot of character; Bieber humbles himself by pointing out his wrongdoings so publicly.
His music on this new album is in my opinion outstanding and worthy of much praise. "Purpose" is Bieber’s fourth studio album and is, arguably, the most successful yet. My personal favorite songs on the album are “What Do You Mean?” “Sorry,” and “Love Yourself.” “What Do You Mean?” reached the number one song in the nation on the Billboard Top 100 chart, and number eight on the Adult Top 40 chart. “Sorry” reached the number two song in the nation on the Billboard Top 100 chart. “Love Yourself” reached the number four song in the nation on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
The success of these songs reflects the effort Bieber has put in to create them and perform them. Bieber closed the American Music Awards on November 22 with a performance mash up of “Where Are You Now?” “What Do You Mean?” and “Sorry” that showed off his singing and dance skills in an out-of-the-box performance. New York Daily News reports, “The 21-year-old singer forcefully dropped the mic during the chorus and broke it down on stage leading a fleet of dancers amid bright technicolored flashing lights.”
With the popularity Bieber has gained from his music, interviews, and performances, I consider the album, "Purpose," a comeback. While Justin had a strict fanbase of pre-teens to young teenagers when he started his music career, this album has put him back in the spotlight and gained him more fans across the nation. I still don’t consider myself a “Belieber,” but I love his music and the new image he is creating for himself.
