Alabama Alpha Phi recently yanked their video after an Op-Ed article claimed that the video was, “worse for women than Donald Trump," further calling it “reductive and objectifying." However, when I saw this video I thought it was well-done, fun, happy and - contrary to what the Op-Ed article called it - empowering.
Today in society, women are encouraged to embrace their sexuality, feel beautiful (with or without makeup), and honestly just not give a damn about the judgements of others. Clearly from the responses I saw regarding the Alabama Alpha Phi recruitment video, this is just plain ol' hypocrisy. Girls were being shamed by this woman who wrote the nasty Op-Ed for dancing around in bikinis, looking pretty, and basically having a good time.
One of the criticisms that I read about was their weight. Critics claimed that these girls were too skinny. This is exactly what gives girls body image issues. These girls are not photoshopped, what you see is what you get. They probably work hard for their bodies or are born like that. Hey, whichever one it is - it's their bodies and they have the right to flaunt them, which means that you have no right to judge. People get offended when others call someone fat, but it's actually just as offensive to call someone too skinny as well.
There are going to be things in this world that you may not like. "Slut shaming" these girls and calling them "the real life version of everything you hate in the greek system" is not a mature way to handle it. These girls were having fun in their recruitment video, and showing off the fun side of college. Going to college is an overwhelming experience and at the end of the day, after all of your classes and school-related stress, you want a fun and supportive home-away-from-home to go back to.
Those in the Greek community know that sororities have a strong foundation of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Alabama Alpha Phi exemplifies these three values and looks damn good doing it, too.
Bottom line: the real problem with the Alabama Alpha Phi Video wasn't the video itself, but rather the harsh audience that was just looking for something to complain about.
So, what's the answer going to be? Do we continue to bash women for embracing their sexuality, choosing how they market themselves, and being free-spirited? Or do we actually stick to what society keeps telling us to do and stop being judgmental? Let me know because the hypocrisy of this all is quite confusing to me.
