According to The Guardian, a triple suicide bombing resulted in 41 deaths and 230 injuries at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on Wednesday.
Turkey has now had a rash of deadly bombings this year including two suicide attacks in Istanbul charged to ISIL, and two car bombings in Ankara charged to a Kurdish militant group. No group has claimed the attack yet but Turkey has stated that the Islamic State is the most likely suspect for the attack on the third busiest airport in Europe, with 61.8 million passengers passing through per year, and one that had high security. The attack was very similar to the airport bombing at Brussels’ Zaventem airport. ISIS has called for increased attacks during Ramadan and it seems Turkey is the next victim after the Baghdad bombing. This attack has really brought home for me the unholiness of the so-called Islamic State. They in no way represent the Muslim faith as I know it.
The attackers have been identified by officials as being from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Turkish police are investigating the three assailants’ backgrounds based on screen grabs from the airport’s surveillance video. They were both armed with guns and wearing explosive vests, they shot first and then detonated their vests.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement that the latest attack “shows that terrorism strikes with no regard to faith or values,” in reference to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, in which the attack occurred.
To use the holy month of Ramadan to attack people, and their general disregard for life, is proof that they do not represent Islam or Muslims as a whole. ISIS needs to be stopped, but in no way should their "religion" and those who actually follow that religion be blamed. When the investigation is complete, we should lay the blame on those responsible and their supporters, and no one else.
In the meantime, we should spend our time giving our condolences, thoughts, and as much aid as possible to the victims of this horrific attack and focus on how it might be prevented in the future.
