Since I was a young girl I had been taught in grade school about how our nation was ‘found’, created, and populated. Some loaded up on ships from England to escape prosecution from religious prosecution. Some were forcefully loaded onto ships to become slaves here. Some came to escape poverty from their homeland. Get the picture? Our ancestors came here to create a better environment for the generations to come with their families.
We have advanced so much in the last hundred years. Our technology is futuristic, our economy is great, and cars are a great big plus! When we started this country we had horse drawn buggies and we had telegrams as a form of communication. The question today is if we have come so far in technology, acedemics, and medical care; why are we still condemning those who come here? Are we scared of differences? Jealous of these newcomers? Or are do we have miss placed anger towards all of a certain race or religion for what has happened in the past? These topics have been the highlight of our news for the last 3 to 4 years.
Ahmed Mohammad was an innocent fifteen year old kid who is very intelligent. He is also an inventor. Mohammad created a clock from scratch and was very excited to show his teacher what he created. He shows it to him, all in good faith, but is handcuffed and sent to jail. The school system did not inform his parents about his arrest; the jail house called them. He was a victim of discrimination and religious stereotyped. Lets be clear on what discrimination is to clarify that he was discriminated. Discrimination is the treatment or consideration of or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing is perceived to belong to rather than on individual merit. This included treatment and individual or group based on their actual or perceived membership in a certain group or social category, In a way that is worse than the way people are usually treated.
Let’s think rationally about things. So we have a kid who seems to be comfortable enough to bring his new invention to his teacher. This teacher would have had to get to know Mohammad enough to be comfortable with him, what he creates. If this teacher then knows about his creativity could it be said that he knows his religious affiliation outside the obvious: his name. In conclusion, this teacher had to have known Ahmed personally. This kid was wrongfully singled out because he was of the Muslim religion. Had he have been Caucasian or African American he would not have been put in handcuffs. Americans are so quick to connect Muslims with ISIS or 9/11. You can make a bomb out of a pair of underwear! If he wanted to blow up his classmates, he could have had the chance with each morning he changed his clothes! No child should have to worry if he or she is going to be put in jail because they create something that is perceived to kill just because of their nationality.
In light of Donald Trump’s many foolish outlandish accusations about Immigrants some Americans have taken it upon themselves to become witch hunters. They are seeking out all other people who look like Immigrant descent or religion and judging them, threatening them or calling law enforcement on them for the slightest things.“These days, it feels to me like you make a devil's pact when you walk into this country. You hand over your passport at the check-in, you get stamped, you want to make a little money, get yourself started... but you mean to go back! Who would want to stay? Cold, wet, miserable; terrible food, dreadful newspapers - who would want to stay? In a place where you are never welcomed, only tolerated. Just tolerated. Like you are an animal finally house-trained.” Zadie Smith, White Teeth. How do these Americans think America will grow and prosper if you stamp out differences? Foreigners are the people who bring a spice to our nation, color. They are what make America, America. We were founded by Immigrants. Shouldn’t we be more accepting of them? Shouldn’t we learn who they are as an individual instead of making them change their name just because our minds don't comprehend their language in which their name arose? Shouldn’t we as a thoughtful, intelligent country be beyond petty grievances caused be a radical few to forgive since we are a christian nation? Immigrants are not the problem they are the solution. They are the reminders of what our ancestors were, what they envisioned, and built. They are what make Americans, Americans.
