Earlier this year, we saw the adventures of Peggy Carter outside of the silver-screen in the ABC show "Agent Carter". The period drama was well received with audiences and critics alike, so it was no surprise when it was renewed. Since then, though, fans have wondered what else is in store for Peggy and the S.S.R.
The first season of "Agent Carter" saw Dr. Faustus as the season's ultimate villain, much to the delight of comic readers everywhere. It came as no huge surprise, given that Faustus has been a prominent villain for Captain America for many years since his debut back in 1969 in "Captain America" #107. The infamous Red Room, where super spy Black Widow is trained, was also introduced.
With heavy hitters such as those, who or what else will appear in the sophomore season?
Luckily, fans no longer have to wait for that answer.
Executive producer Tara Butter has revealed that Madame Masque will be the latest villain for Peggy Carter to contend with in the second season of ABC's hit show.
Don't expect to see a modern incarnation of Madame Masque on the small-screen, however. Butters has revealed that certain characteristics will be changed to make Madame Masque fit into the 1940s world of "Agent Carter." While she is mostly known for her role in certain "Iron Man" story arcs, she was also featured heavily in Matt Fraction's "Hawkeye" series, which recently concluded in July.
Madame Masque has had an interesting history in Marvel Comics, serving as both a villain and hero. She was first introduced in 1968 as Whitney Frost in "Tales of Suspense" #98. She was soon revealed to be the daughter of crime lord Count Nefaria, who eventually convinced his daughter to join him. After a plane crash disfigured her face, causing her to wear a gold mask, she took on the name Madame Masque.
But for the show, she will not appear as she does in the comics. Instead, audiences will see a different take on the iconic character. “I think we’ve changed the look of her a bit obviously. We’ve made her an actress, which is very Hedy Lamar. She was a ’40s siren actress who was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this character.”
There is still a chance that her character will still have ties to the criminal Nefaria family, but nothing is solid yet. While Madame Masque will not be involved in a romance with Tony Stark like her comic book counterpart, it's more than likely Howard Stark will be involved, as Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) has mentioned that Dominic Cooper is set to reprise the role of Howard Stark, although no official word has been said. It has been confirmed, according to ScreenRant, that executive producers revealed that both Peggy and Jarvis will not be under the employ of Stark like they were in season one.
ScreenRant also reported that James D'Arcy, Edwin Jarvis, and Enver Gjokaj, Agent Daniel Sousa, would be series regulars in season two. No word yet on whether Chad Michael Murray and Lyndsy Fonseca are returning to the roles of Agent Jack Thompson and Angie Martinelli, respectively.
Season two of "Agent Carter" will premiere in 2016 on ABC.
