As many people are aware, the 2016 election was a shit show. We had totally unexpected results and the thing that many people didn't even expect to happen, happened, which was Republican nominee Donald Trump winning the election. No one I knew seemed to actually believe that it could have happened, but in the end it didn't matter whether or not they did. They had to accept what happened and move on like everyone else. But how did he win? Though that's a complicated answer that I am not qualified enough to answer, I do know it's partly because fake news made by people trying to swing the results by convincing the unintellectual people of America who see bullshit fake news and automatically believe it because it fits into their schema's of the world. And it worked.
There are many fake news websites that I have looked at (in pain), such as Breitbart, Infowars, and the Drudge Report. There are countless others, but these are the forerunners in the alt-right (if you aren't familiar with alt-right, think Nazis. They are so far right they don't even agree with mainstream conservatives) community that have unearthed themselves now that racism is somewhat more socially acceptable. Scrolling through the websites, it's clear it's not just fake news. There are things that have been reported by unbiased sources such as NPR and Reuters, but for the most part is just garbage that is meant to get Neo-Nazis riled up against the "Libertards".
I think now America is on the same path as almost every other broken country that has tried to be "great again", and we will soon be irrelevant and even more broken if we aren't gone completely, perhaps wiped out by nukes or just complete economic collapse where we need wheelbarrows of money in order to buy gum. Or maybe we will become the country of streets paved with gold once more, a shining beacon to other countries to base themselves on. Though I am extremely progressive when it comes to politics, I believe optimism (think Voltaire's Candide. No matter what happens, I am here now, so everything is ok) and I believe until gravely bad things occur, that wouldn't have happened had Donald Trump not been president, then there is no point in complaining. All we can do is carry on.
