American soldiers are still dying in Afghanistan, although it is not something currently receiving a lot of media coverage or being spoken about by any of the presidential candidates. Despite what one might believe, a conflict still exists. The Afghan war is actually becoming America's longest lasting war. ISIS has become America's biggest threat besides the Taliban who formerly terrified Americans for years, which is why candidates like Trump and Hillary have lingered on them. When Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, she was a huge advocate for sending thousands of troops to battle in Afghanistan. Trump referred to the war as a "terrible mistake," but believes we should keep troops there due to its proximity to Pakistan which is armed with nuclear weapons. The fact neither of the majority party candidates have commented on the issue is severely alarming considering one of the first decision the new president will have to make will concern troops and the war in Afghanistan.
Last year, Barack Obama agreed to permanently leave 10,000 troops in Afghanistan at all times, while the Taliban continues to stake land in Afghanistan as their own. As of October 7th, the war will have been going on for 15 years. Apparently, the Taliban now possess more territory than it did back in 2001 despite American effort. Due to this apparent failure, one can assume that that is an obvious reason as to why the war has not spoken about by much of the media or any of the presidential candidates. I believe that people should inform themselves about this war because it does a disservice to those who are still dying in Afghanistan for their country.
