A Letter To My High School Self

Why I wish time machines could exist.

Hi little one,

It’s frightening to think how fast the last year will slip by, but this is one of the lessons I know you’ve already begun to learn - time flies. So if I can do anything from my standpoint, it would be to tell you these few things…

Write. Write about the things that are happening to you and the way you feel about the way they are. Don’t write for anybody but you. It’s fascinating to look back and see how your feelings will change about things as time goes on.

Read the news! Even if it's just headlines if you’re in a rush. Always know what’s going on. Not only is it good to be aware for yourself, but I can’t tell you how many more conversations you’re going to be able to be a part of once you get to college. Know things!

If your friends want to do something, even if you are tired and have a lot of homework, go. While you are never able to get back the hour spent driving around town singing High School Musical’s soundtrack with your best friends, you will never regret where it was spent. You will have plenty more opportunities for homework, but moments like these will be the dearest in your heart.

But at the same time… Don’t forget the student you once were in your final months. I know, there is no better feeling than being happy you got into your school, you can relax now a bit. But don’t take senioritis to its full extent. Keep challenging your brain. It’s going to appreciate the practice in a few months.

Read as many biographies of comedians as you can. They’re amazing, you love them, make time for them. Comedy is timeless, so you can’t use the excuse that it’s a waste of time!

It’s very okay to be a little selfish sometimes. Remember that at the end of the day, everyone’s end goal is to create his or her own path. Don’t get lost in the shuffle on yours.

Spend whatever little time you can with your mom. She’s panicking because she knows she’s about to lose a little part of her soon when you go away, and while she’s able to, she’s desperate to hold on to it. Humor her, it’s the very least you owe her.

Take lots of pictures. I cannot stress this one enough. Our brains can only handle so much to remember. Sometimes a little visual aid is helpful to spark the memory of some of the best times in our lives with the people who enriched them most when we needed them to. Not to mention, they're almost always bound to put a smile on your face when you're down.

And that’s my case. Find the silver lining in everything, because every event in your life will move too quickly to remember it as poor. Don’t stress over the little things, and enjoy your life, because, did I mention it will go kinda quick?

Love always,

Somehow Already a College Student

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
