High school comes and goes in the blink of an eye. It seems cliche but it’s the truth. There’s so much to look forward to, so much you have to learn (aside from the school work), but also so much you can lose. It’s important to keep these pieces of advice in mind before entering high school.
1. If you're interested in a particular club or activity at school, join it!
If you want to join a club or a sport, do it! Don't worry about what your friends or any significant other will think about how you're spending your time. Not only does joining clubs/extra curricular activities look good on college applications and your resume, you can also break out of your shell and meet new people. It also gives you the opportunity to do something you've never done before.
2. Shoot for those honors and AP classes!
It does require a lot more extra and hard thinking but it will be well worth it once you graduate. You'll be ahead of the game when it comes to prepping for college. Also, a lot of AP classes transfer out so you'll end up saving money!!
3. DON'T put a significant other or "love" before your best friends
It does feel good to have that special someone give you attention but not if it comes at the cost of losing your best friends. Many long term friendships end or get distanced in high school because someone forgets about the other(s). Don't let this happen to you. Make more time for those who have always had your back from day 1.
4. DON'T fool around in the first few years and then try to save yourself in the end.
Senior year should be a relaxing year for you. You still have classes and homework but it shouldn't be a heavy load. Many people think that they'll have time to fix their mistakes later and have fun now but you need to shake that mentality off. You only end up stressing yourself out more than you need to be. Work hard the first few years then enjoy the end!
5. High school is filled with drama, but don't let people push you.
These days, you can get suspended or even worse, arrested if you fight so don't let anyone try to push you off the edge. Turn your cheek instead because in the end, you're the bigger person and you won't risk losing anything if you just walk away. The consequences won't be worth it.
6. Build at least two professional relationships with teachers at your school.
Not only will you find a mentor in these teachers, but you will eventually need a recommendation from them and they will be the most genuine people to write it for you. You have built a strong relationship and they have possibly watched you grow up. It's important to make connections even in high school.
7. If you're ever feeling down or depressed, talk to your school's social worker.
They are trained not to judge you. They are available to help you whenever you need someone and can even refer you to other services if need be. Don't ever think you have no one to talk to. There is always someone there.
8. If college is part of your future plans, prep for it earlier than later.
You just got into high school and there's already going to be a focus on college. It might be overwhelming for a bit but the earlier you start to do something about it, the less you have to work on later. Junior year is when you begin to apply but it's never too early to think about what career you'd want and what school you're interested in.
9. Everyone makes mistakes. That's life!
Mistakes are going to be made but always think about what's better for you and your life. Don't worry about fitting in, just be you. will fall into place, even if it seems like it won't. Have fun and learn from mistakes. Don't lose yourself trying to impress other people. These next four years should be a good time. Don't let anyone or anything take that from you!
