For some people graduating High School is the happiest moment of their young adult life, while for others it's the complete opposite. You're leaving behind your close friends, the easy work and for those that go away to school, your family.
Before I left to go away to college, kids who were currently in it and those who graduated years before were constantly talking about their crazy experiences and how hard the work was. For a few months I legitamently thought that college was just some big party with school in between, (I clearly was wrong), but that's what everyone made it out to be.
Little did I know that there was a lot more to the first two years of college than me going to the bars every weekend or the Anatomy test that I spent two weeks studying for.
So to all you incoming "Freshies" here's some advice for your first two years of college, and what it's really like...
1. The friends you meet the first week of school won't actually be your friends a month later
2. Do NOT drink that personal of Bicardi, by yourself, in one night...
i don't care if you used to chug Lokos back in High School or if you're on a sports team where everyone around you seems to be doing that. You'll end up making a fool out of yourself, where everyone at the party is staring at you and you may even end up puking on that cute guy that sits next to you on the couch.. Can you say awkward
3. Not every guy you 'talk' to is going to want to date you
Me being a hopeless romantic, this took me a while to understand. I was constantly telling my friends that he was a good guy and trying to make him look good when they were right about him the whole time.
4. Going back to the last bullet, ALWAYS listen to your friends
They may give you advice or tell you things that you don't want to hear, but chances are they're right... Oh naive girl, please listen!
5. You're going to meet your "person" in college and it'll be a girl
I met my best friend in college and it was like she was meant to be in my life (sounds stupid, but just you wait). Within the first few days of us hanging out, I wondered where she was my whole life. This "person" of yours is going to be there for you 24.7, she'll be dancing on the bar next to you, picking you up from guy's houses and there to take road trips to Cold Stone.
6. Don't go out partying every night, especially on nights before you have an exam
Tequila Tuesday may sound very appealing, but that Anatomy exam is much more important in the long run.
7. The "Freshman Fifteen" is a real thing
I don't care if you eat salads everyday, because I somehow did that and managed to still gain fifteen pounds. This is somewhat impossible to avoid, just keep up on going to the gym and try to eat healthy... Even though those wings are tempting..
8. Don't spend all your money
This is very hard, but don't go to Buffalo Wild Wings every night if you're paying a few thousand dollars for a meal plan.
9. Call your parents everyday
You being away from home is harder on them than you think, giving them a daily phone call will really make their day.
10. You're going to find someone you really like, you may even fall in love with.
I went into college not wanting to have a boyfriend at all, but within two months I found someone and he completely changed my mind. This relationship will be a lot different from your High School one. You're going to make a lot of memories with him or her, and at one point you may even think they're the "one."
11. With that comes heartbreak
This one's really going to suck, I'm not going to lie to you. You'll be seeing their snapchats of them out, or their Instagrams, and zooming in to see that girl or guy in the background. What took me a while to realize, and I'm still realizing, is that sometimes people aren't meant to be in your life forever. This is where your friends, ice cream and romantic movies come in handy.
12. You'll drift away from friends you thought you'll have forever.
Sometimes "friend break ups" hurt just as much as relationship ones. During your college years everyone is trying to find out who they are, what they want to be and what they want in their life. With all this figuring out, people drift apart and that's okay, we're all just trying to find ourselves.
13. Don't forget about your home friends
Your home friends have been there a lot longer than your college friends. It's completely okay to make new friends in college, but make sure you still keep in touch with your friends from back home. I used to love getting phone calls from my best friends from home, sometimes they're the only ones that can make you escape the "college" life for a bit.
14. Go support your schools sports teams
I was a college athlete for one year, but it was always so cool seeing students come support you. I always made an effort to support the teams at my school by going to their games.
15. Time goes by fast, make sure you live the next two years to the fullest.
The next two years will fly by, I constantly find myself wondering how I'm going into my third year of college already. Make sure you do everything you want to do, go out of your comfort zone and sign up for clubs and make new friends. My friends always make fun of me because I constantly take pictures and videos whenever we're together, no matter what. But you have to do it, time goes by so fast and I'm happy I have all these pictures and videos to look back on.
