The school year is closing in on those of us in high school and grades below, and with that comes a load of new freshmen. I know the word "freshman" causes those of us who have survived the dreaded first year of high school to scoff, but remember that dealing with freshmen isn't nearly as bad as being one. So to those of you venturing into high school, here are some words of advice from yours truly, a senior.
1. This isn't High School Musical
We are certainly not all in this together, so find your group of friends (or multiple groups if that's how you roll) and keep them close.
2. You are not going to get pushed into a locker
Despite what many movies depict, upperclassmen tend to leave freshmen alone.
3. Yes, everyone gets acne
You're not alone with acne, which seems to hit most people in high school (how convenient). Some people just have magical ways of covering it and those who convince you their skin is completely clear are liars. No one cares if you have acne, and in high school, there is no room to judge someone for that. Know you're not the only one dealing with it, and if it is an insecurity of yours, take your time finding the right solution for your skin type; we're all different.
4. It doesn't matter what you wear
Just because Becky only wears name-brand clothes doesn't mean you have to do the same. By senior year your wardrobe will have most likely embraced sweatpants anyway. Besides, no one is going to remember what you wore yesterday.
5. Try everything
Don't be discouraged to audition for the school play or to try out for the soccer team just because you're a freshman. Become president of the student council, join a book club, do what you want to do.
6. Be kind to everyone
Unfortunately, high school is a convenient place for cliques to form and for negativity to radiate. It's so incredibly important to be kind to every single person you come across (even though that's not always the "cool" thing to do). We hear this all the time and it has become cliché, but you really never know what someone is going through. Be the positive spark in someone's day and bring some kindness back into your school.
7. Figure out your sleep schedule
As the school year goes by, the work load will only grow. It's important to get into a routine of doing your homework at a certain time each day/night so you are able to fall into a sleep schedule. With the stress of school and extracurricular activities, sleep will become incredibly valuable and keeping your body in a routine will keep you all around healthier.
High school really isn't as bad as it is portrayed to be, as long as you keep an open and positive mind. Hopefully my few words of advice help you, and I wish you the best of luck!
