Fashion. Lolita fashion specifically are what make my life vibrant and gives me another medium for me to be able to express myself. It’s a fashion that has helped me make friends who understand the struggles of loving petticoats, ribbons, and beautiful dresses. Even if most people in their twenties have no real clue as to what that is. Regardless, it is a fashion that has lead me across the ocean to a world I never imagined myself being in: Berlin, Germany.
Yes, going to Berlin, all for my love of this beautiful fashion. I stumbled upon a post in a Facebook group that was advertising an event called Urban Fairytale. Being curious about it I looked into it and found that it would have one of the biggest brand names in Lolita Fashion would be there: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. It is one of my favorite brands when it comes to what I am willing to save up extra cash to buy a dress. My interest was piqued fully when I saw that both Baby and other Lolita Brands like Mighty Kingdom needed models for the fashion show that they would be holding for both days. That’s when: I took that chance. Even if I felt like I didn’t fit into lolita fashion entirely because there aren’t many African Americans within the fashion. Regardless, I sent in my application bought my ticket for both days and played the waiting game.
The results came in and I was selected to model for not one Lolita brand, but two! I was shocked when they sent out the letter telling me that I was selected to model. Baby, being among one of the brands Mighty Kingdom being the other. I was pumped for this trip and there was no saying no to the trip.
When I finally got to meet Rin, Masumi Kano of Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, yes I was truly amazed that it even happened. I was in awe especially since they were so kind. Plus, the other designer Kuma Kana of Mighty Kingdom was sweet as well. I had an amazing time, even if I did feel a little out of place being the only African American attending well only American for that matter that didn’t even speak a lick of German. But, it was worth the trip I felt like a true princess for a weekend and I not only enjoyed the fashion show but the friendly girls who were both models and attendees.
Once the weekend was over and the fairytale ended. I took one last go around in Berlin on bike, I contemplated the weekend and how I had met so many amazing girls in so little time. The beautiful sights of Berlin whisked by me as I rode through different parts of the vast city. My life was forever transformed by this trip. I was able to expand my mind and see a land that I never thought I would have the chance to see. I wondered why it all happened to me.
