As the term Friendsgiving becomes increasingly more popular every year, many people are still left in the dark with it's newfound importance in many adolescents lives. I'm sure the term has been around for quite sometime, but this year it seems just about everyone I know participated in at least one college Friendsgiving. It's a time to sit around a table and enjoy the presence of your friends, and a hosh-posh meal. It's definitely a positive experience.
Now while most people will be automatically intrigued with the mention of a large meal, another aspect I've come to know about this beloved Friendsgiving event is the fact that some of my friends don't have a nice family to enjoy Thanksgiving with. This new holiday is a time for some kids to finally experience a fun and peaceful Thanksgiving ambiance, surrounded by their loving friends. I love being able to share this with them. The first time I was able to participate was in high school (which frankly isin't the most privileged school in Arkansas). Everyone brought a dish and little fall embellishments, it was such a nice gesture. Even people who didnt contribute were allowed to join in, and I knew some of the kids that ate pie amongst us wouldn't get this chance over the holidays. Looking back on that event helped me realize just how blessed I am. If you have a family that is willing to put in the work for a fantastic meal, you're lucky. If you have a family with the means to merely afford a fantastic meal, you're lucky. But, they joy in Friendsgiving is that you're blessed with the friendships that surround you, and nothing else matters.
College has transformed the way I look forward to the holidays. It's so important to cherish the little time you get to spend with your family. On the same token, it's nice to have all this time with your growing friendships in college, and what better way to commemorate then by a lavish meal? There's so much time to celebrate this holiday, all the way up until actual Thanksgiving! Any chance you get, I advise going to a Friendsgiving. If you can't seem to find one, have your own! Invite people to your place! It might seem odd, but even in the small collegiate apartments you can have wonderful fellowship. Who can turn down such a fun opportunity? Plus, the eating agenda isn't nearly as strict as Thanksgiving, you can make/bring whatever you want. I've seen Friendsgiving with chicken nuggets, so every last bit counts. I hope you can all experience this with the friends you hold dear to you!
