Stevie Wonder said it best in “Sir Duke” when he sang, “Music knows it is and always will, be one of the good things that life just won’t quit. They can feel it all over, they can feel it all over people.”
Music is that one intangible thing that brings us together. It aids us in our celebrations and comforts us in our grief. It adds a little background noise and flair to our lives. Music makes us feel like a character in our own movie. Because let’s be honest, who doesn’t want “Bad Reputation” playing in the background as you have a moment of rebellion like Emma Stone in Easy A, or “Shout” blasting from speakers as you sing and dance at a classic college toga party like John Belushi in Animal House. Who doesn’t want “Sound of Silence” smoothly serenading you when you think you lost the girl, like it did for Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, or “Don’t You Forget About Me” thunderously applauding you when you finally get the girl like it did for Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club.
Everyday, we add songs to the soundtrack of our lives. As we experience more, the music becomes more and more interesting. Just like we share our stories and moments with one another, we also share music. When you share, it is almost like you are allowing people to understand a little piece of you. It’s amazing how the simple connection of sounds made by instruments can give us a reason to cry, to sing, and be joyful. There are so many ways in which music gives. It gives an ability to love. An ability to hate. An excuse to rebel. It’s true, you can feel music all over. When it hits you, it doesn’t hit lightly. Today, I hope you add some more songs to the soundtrack of your life, so below are some songs based on common moods. And maybe they will help add a little flair to your day. Listen to them. Or don’t. But begin to give yourself a chance to appreciate all that music does for the world.
