If you're a freshman and you're not from Brockport or the surrounding areas, you might be at a little loss of what to do this weekend when your family comes up. Sure you can sign up for the activities, but what happens when you finish them? I mean if you like football, you can always go to the game of the Brockport Eagles against St. John Fisher College (we're totes gonna win (probably)). But what if you're not a big football fan (like me)? Well here's a list of activities you can do with your family:
1. Sign up for Build-a-Buddy!
If you have younger siblings this is a must! My youngest brother loved this because he had the opportunity to actually make a stuffed animal and it came with a cool shirt advertising for Brockport, so it was a way for him to feel close to me while I'm away.
2. Sign up for The Amazing Race!
This is a really cool and fun thing to do. You get to explore the campus with your family while making memories, as cheesy at that sounds. Last year, my family and my roommate's family bonded and we all had a blast racing around campus and taking selfies with various objects and peoples. FYI this activity is not for extremely shy people.
3. Check out Jimmy Z's!
Whether or not you've had the chance to experience the awesomeness that is Jimmy Z's for yourself or not, this is a total "must do" with your family if you happen to be walking along Main Street. If I could I would totally just drink their Mint Ting-a-Ling shakes all day long, but that would be very bad. I also recommend the loaded waffle fries because waffle fries are the domb dot com by theirself, but once you had cheese and bacon? They become phenomenal. Your family will enjoy getting a taste of Brockport while seeing your *favorite* places to visit during your free time with your friends.
4. Need a lunch place? Head to the Brockport Diner!
My family absolutely loves this place. Every time my dad dropped me off last year (I do have a license just no car ._.) we would always stop here for lunch. Ironically enough, we sat in the same booth every time and we taken care of by the same lovely waitress. The Diner has such a homey feel and really good, inexpensive food that everyone will love. My personal favorites include bacon grilled cheese and the chocolate chip pancakes. The chicken caesar salad is delicious and huge so I suggest bringing a big appetite!
5. Go play all day at the Strong Museum of Play! (Rochester, NY)
This place is absolutely amazing. This year, after I Build-a-Buddy, I am making my family go here because I know that my brother (and my dad) will have a blast.
6. Give your family a personal tour of the campus. Try to point out all the places you've been, where your classes are, that one spot where that one thing happened, the dining halls, that other spot that another thing happened, and everything else you think they would enjoy.
College is hard on parents because it reminds them that their "wittle baby" has grown up and is becoming independent. Humor me, and them, and by doing some of these activities and spending quality time with your family.
