The summer is one of the best times to travel with friends and family. Since classes are over (even if you are taking a summer class) you will have the time to spend at the beach, in another state or the pool. If you happen to be visiting New York City (either alone or with friends) there is a variety of fun activities to see and experience. These are 10 cool things to check out in the city.

Visit Art Galleries or a Museum

There are plenty of locations to see interesting and unique works of art (not just the graffiti sprayed on the sides of buildings) around the city. Two places to check out are the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the different art galleries in Chelsea. The pieces consist of contemporary, traditional and abstract paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and even video artworks. By taking a look around, you might find something that captures your interest.

See a SummerStage Show

If you enjoy live entertainment, this is something you have to see this summer. SummerStage has events in all five boroughs, and features parties, concerts and theatrical performances. There are so many different gigs to watch, so make sure to catch your favorite actor, musician or dancer at one of the many parks throughout the city. You will need to get a ticket, but it's an event that you definitely would not want to miss.

Buy something at a Street Fair

If you get a chance during your walk around the city, stop by one of the street fairs where venders are selling food, clothes, gifts, and artwork. The weather is nice and the roads will be free of cars. This will give you and friends the opportunity to take a good look at the amazing sites. Have a fun time, and do not forget to take pictures.

Stop by the World's First Rooftop Winery

Interested in visiting a winery? Travel to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for something unique. In this area there is a place where you can visit the world's first rooftop vineyard. Walk around, and get a look at the 150 grapevines and try a sample of wine at the tasting room. There are activities and hammocks if you need to take a break and relax for a while.

Go on a Food Cruise

If you never went on a NYC boat, then here is your chance to do it. The Manhattan by Sail or the Classic Harbor Line is two great choices. Have some delicious food and observe the skyscrapers as the boat takes you on a ride around Manhattan. This is a fun activity (if you are not seasick) and would like to take a break from the excitement of the city.

Go to a festival

The weather will be nice and the streets of the city will most definitely be packed with tourists. Why not take a trip to one of the music or food festivals. These events are filled with performances, souvenirs, and tasty snacks. The Electric Zoo is just one example. Be sure to check online and look for a festival that might interest you.

Enjoy a meal outdoors

Going to a new restaurant in the city is great. One way to make your dining experience better is spending your time at one of the rooftop or garden locations. You will get an amazing view of the city and can try delicious food and drinks. Since the restaurant will be at a unique location such as Arlo Blooms or Eataly's Serra Fiorita, you will be able to feel the fresh breeze, and have the choice of either looking down on the city or secluded from the crowds.

Watch cute animals

If you love animals, then you will certainly find adorable ones at the Queens Zoo. You will find bear cubs and African black-footed penguins, along with other animals. It is a big place, so it would be a good idea to bring friends along with you. The Queens Zoo is a wonderful place to visit if you are traveling to the city and are looking to spend time at a new location.

Explore a Pop Up Exhibition

Any of the NYC pop up shows looks beautiful. They attract many tourists and will make you feel relaxed after a long day of walking around the city. One of them is The Rose Mansion which features 14 rooms with cabanas, drinks, and a virtual vineyard. Sample a glass of wine, take pictures, and celebrate some time away from the craziness outside.

Spend time at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Here is a spot where you can get lost in the beauty of nature. This is one of the many botanical gardens in the city. Observe the green roof, Shakespeare and Japanese garden. The place is so amazing; you will no longer feel like you are in the city. Do not forget to pick up something at the gift shop before you leave.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
