Four years ago, I read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." It’s a fairly short book to begin with, but I think it was the fastest I had ever read a book in my life. I couldn’t put it down. It was filled with life quotes and relatable messages that I believe people everywhere can relate to in some aspect of their lives. There was one quote (probably one of the most popular ones) that I always remembered from that book.
“We accept the love we think we deserve.”
I always liked that quote because I thought it was well written and had a good message, but I never truly comprehended that statement until this past year. I’ve watched my friends, my sisters, and even myself in relationships, and sometimes I’m left dumbfounded as to how some of them can let their friends or significant other treat them the way we do.
This goes back to the love we think we deserve. If we believe that we deserve someone less than what we are, then we will settle. We settle for the boy or girl who’s always been there. We settle with the friends who we’ve always known. We settle with being comfortable because sometimes it’s easier to be comfortable than it is to accept change. From the inside, it’s difficult to recognize that we are settling, but it’s time to change that.
“Can we let them know that they deserve more?”
“We can try.”
A true friend or someone who truly loves you will love you for everything that you are and everything that you are not, but this also goes for you too. You must love yourself for all your imperfections and everything that you are. Stop feeling average or believing whatever bullsh*t story you’re telling yourself that keeps you feeling like you deserve less.
We all deserve to love and be loved in a way that makes us feel like we got the world.
So love people with all your heart and receive love just as big if not bigger. Stop settling. Love yourself. This life is too short to be anything but happy.
