'An Abundance Of Katherines' Book Review

Socially awkward teenager and anagramming master Colin Singleton has reached a pitiful halt in his learning career. Trapped between titles, he finds himself on a desperate search for the answer to his problems: a eureka moment, much like that experienced by many historically famous figures, of which he can use to propel him from child prodigy to adult genius. To make matters worse for Colin however, he has just been dumped. For the 19th consecutive time. By yet another girl named Katherine. In a desperate attempt to save Colin from himself, witty and devoted sidekick, Hassan Harbish, prompts the pair to embark on a roadtrip to the little-known town of Gutshot, Tennessee, where Colin commences his endeavor to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability. By recalling the past to predict the future, Colin has the ultimate realization that destiny is not defined, and no matter the circumstance of the past, there is hope for the future.
Throughout Abundance of Katherines, John Green does not stray from consistency. His frequent footnotes providing witty comments and mathematical equations explaining complex theories flow magnificently with the quirky propensities of protagonist Colin Singleton to enhance the eccentricity of the novel. Although the road trip theme is a bit cliched in modern literature, Green does an excellent job portraying its worthiness to the novel; Colin’s literal journey of mind is well reflected through the metaphorical journey of a road trip. Abundance of Katherines consists of a somewhat brazen style that may not be enjoyable for every reader, but is however appreciated by those who enjoy its comedic element. Although many novels try to incorporate an indelible life lesson, there are only but a few who succeed. Abundance of Katherines surpasses common expectation of a remarkable moral story by not only displaying it in the life of a relatable teenage boy, but also by applying it to a functioning math equation. In addition, the conciseness of the novel allows it to hold the reader’s attention for the entire span of the story, thoroughly impacting its audience within a short number of pages.

Abundance of Katherines is a novel that seems to live in the shadow of the later John Green best seller, The Fault in Our Stars, however, this underdog was a 2007 Michael L. Printz Honor book and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, it was also named one of the books of the year by Booklist, Horn Book, and Kirkus.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
