The ABCs Of UNE
University of New England

The University of New England is the place I have learned to call home for the past two and a half years. The students, professors, and staff help to make this place so great. I have made some great friends and have had some awesome opportunities here so far. So, without further ado, here is an A through Z list of some things that make UNE special.

1. Alfond

Alfond Center for Health Sciences is the home of many labs, lecture halls, and the Alfond Café!

2. Biddeford

The Biddeford Campus of UNE is located on the Saco River, and is home to a variety of undergraduate programs and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

3. Campus Center

At the Campus Center, you can go to the gym, run on the indoor track, play some basketball, get a bite to eat at The Hang, check out a concert in the MPR's, or hang out in the Cultural Exchange Lounge!

4. Decary

This is the main dining hall on campus.

5. Education

At UNE, students receive an awesome education and experiences to help them in the real world! Learning here truly goes beyond the classroom.

6. Forum

The Forum is the main athletic building, where you will find a weight room, training rooms, an ice rink, and the Forum Grill.

7. Grad students

Usually, these students are just referred to as "the med students" by us undergrads.

8. Health sciences

At UNE, we like to say there are "health people" and "fish people" as the health profession and marine science majors are some of the most popular programs here.

9. Intramural sports

From ultimate frisbee to beach volleyball to broom ball, there are always fun ways to stay active on campus!

10. Jetty

It's always fun to walk down Freddy Beach to the Hills Beach Jetty!

11. Kiosk

The best place to see the sunset on campus. 10/10 would recommend.

12. Labs

Since we pride in being a "science" school, you're going to have to take some lab courses. Luckily, some of them are pretty cool, like this marine bio one!

13. Marine Science Center

The natural habitat of the previously mentioned fish people.

14. Noreasters

UNE: Home of the Noreasters and Stormin' Norman, who was voted the best mascot in Maine!

15. Overseas

The campus in Tangier, Morocco is a perfect place to study abroad!

16. Portland

The Portland campus is home to many of the health professions programs like pharmacy and nursing.

17. Quiet study

If you're looking for a quiet place to study, look no further than the silent floor of the library!

18. Research

Many students have the opportunity to participate in research, whether it is through an established lab or creating your own project!

19. Saco River

It's pretty cool to go to school with a direct view of a river.

20. Thanksgiving dinner

The greatest meal at Decary- annual Thanksgiving dinner when the staff and professors serve all the students!

21. Undergraduate Student Government

Looking to get involved? Join USG and become a student leader.

22. Varsity sports

From hockey to volleyball to lacrosse to rugby, we have plenty of sports teams here to cheer on! Go Big Blue!

23. Windward

Want a quick study snack? Head downstairs from the library to get a smoothie or panini!

24. X chromosomes

Look at this picture. This is pretty much the ratio of girls to guys on this campus.

25. Yik Yakking about the dead squirrel memorial

We love our campus squirrels here, and when one dies, we make a memorial and post about the loss on Yik Yak.

26. Zero regrets

All in all, UNE is a great place full of great people and opportunities, and I have zero regrets about deciding to come here!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
