ABC Should Have Left Roseanne In The 1990s

Roseanne represents the dark side of the internet and should not have been given a reboot.

ABC announced on May 29 that it has canceled the reboot of Roseanne, a show that never should have been aired in the first place.

Roseanne was an incredibly popular show in its heyday. I haven’t watched much of it over the years, but I do know that many laud the show for accurately portraying a struggling middle-class family since many television shows fail to do so.

But that was in the ‘90s, and since then Roseanne Barr herself has been off her rocker. In March, soon after the Roseanne reboot aired, Barr shared conspiracy theories on Twitter from QAnon, an anonymous account on 4chan. On Twitter, Barr said Donald Trump has freed children who were victims of sex trafficking—a conspiracy connected to Pizzagate—the infamous conspiracy that said Hillary Clinton ran a child sex ring at a Washington, D.C. pizzeria.

After the March For Our Lives rally, Roseanne shared a photo of Marjory Stoneman Douglas student David Hogg holding up his fist and said he was doing a Nazi salute.

This could not have been good PR for the reboot, but ABC continued with the show.

What caused ABC to cut the cord was a tweet from Roseanne about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

Roseanne tweeted that Jarrett was a product of the “Muslim brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.” A few hours later, Barr tweeted “Islam is not a race, lefties. Islam includes every race of people.” In a stand-alone tweet , Barr said “Chelsea Soros Clinton,” saying that Clinton is married to a nephew of liberal billionaire George Soros. She apologized to Clinton, but then said that Soros is a Nazi “who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps & stole their wealth-were you aware of that? But, we all make mistakes, right Chelsea?"

Why did ABC wait until this epic Twitter rant to cancel the show? Roseanne has been insane for a while now, so maybe ABC waited until it thought it could no longer profit from her show.

Tim Allen has voiced his displeasure with the lack of conservative voices in Hollywood, going as far as saying it’s like living in 1930s Nazi Germany. Yes, Hollywood does have a majority of liberal-leaning actors, directors, and producers. Roseanne was the best chance it had to show Trump voters on television, and she blew it single-handedly in just a few tweets. If ABC’s goal was to show fringe-right Trump supporters like Barr is in real life, then the goal was accomplished.

Valerie Jarrett responded to the tweet saying that Donald Trump himself has set a tone that allows for people to openly say and do racist things.

Trump then weighed in on his favorite medium of communication, Twitter, and unsurprisingly made it about himself. Trump could have condemned Roseanne's comments, but instead he made it about himself. Trump complained that ABC gave a phone call to Jarrett apologizing for Barr's remarks but failed to apologize to him for Bob Iger's "HORRIBLE" statements made about him.

The Onion, which is always on point with its satire, put out a headline that reads, “ABC Criticized For Unrealistic Portrayal Of Racists Actually Facing Consequences.” From Roseanne to Ted Nugent to Laura Ingraham, it's long been time to point out racism when it occurs and hold these people accountable.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
