Have you ever had writer's block or been unsure of what to write about? You don't have to be a writer to have writer's block, it can be for any writing you might do; essays, journal writing, articles, books, really anything.
You see I get writer's block all the time! I never know what I should write about, sometimes I do know but the process of getting it done is hard. However, when I get to write it on paper I sometimes lose it. I never know how to start it, especially now that I'm writing articles for Odyssey.
Here is what I do as well as some of my thought process as I write.
1. I play music
Most of the time I play music as I'm writing. Music helps me with a lot of thinking, it might sound weird I know but it does help. However, I do admit that I do start dancing to the music and get distracted. I also start writing the words sometimes because I'm singing it out loud, which causes me to write it down.
2. Thinking my writing isn’t good enough
Every time I'm done writing or in the process of writing I always feel like it might not be good enough. I have never thought I was a good writer, I never thought anyone would like it nor would they want to read what I have to say.
3. Random thinking
You think of a lot! A Lot of the time I start thinking about the weather, hanging out with friends, what will happen next time I have to work, what music is playing and what the meaning is behind it, "what if" situations, and memories I've had over the years.
4. Putting words in the wrong spot
Sometimes when you're thinking of what your writing, the wording sounds a lot better in your head than when it's in writing. A lot of the time, the words might be in the wrong spot or it's not the right word you wanted to use in that spot, but you don't know how to change the word or where the right spot is.
5. Overwrite or over think
This happens to me a lot! More times than I would like to admit. When I'm writing most of the time I just write and sometimes it doesn't make sense. I write and I don't stop until it's done, I always mean to go back and edit it but it never happens. Yes I'm aware that's bad, but I do admit that I am bad at editing.
6. Begin to feed into the distractions
Getting distracted is so common that it happens to everyone in every situation. The distractions may include things like your pets - they want attention and won't leave you alone. Your phone is the biggest distraction, you begin to go through your phone. I know that I get distracted by my music, and my social media. I get distracted by the notifications, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook. Then after I go back to my writing.
Now not everyone does or thinks of this as they are trying to write or even as they're writing. Everyone is different in which it's different process for everyone. Everyone has their own thoughts as well as different ways of writing. So I ask, what is your thought process? Do you get distracted? What's your biggest distraction?
