A Beginners Guide To Understanding Yourself

Before I ever had to take personality tests for school or at a career centers I was extremely interested in them. I like the fact that you only had to answer 30-40 questions to learn so much about yourself. Most of the time these tests enforce characteristics you already knew you had. Other times they teach you something new about yourself. It is usually an aspect of yourself that you would have never been made aware of.

One of the major personality tests out there is the Myers Briggs Personality Indicator. It was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Briggs (MBTI). It focuses on four major preferences that you might have in life.

The first is basically asking whether or not you are an introvert or extrovert.

The second focuses on how you process information. Do you take the logical route and focus only on the information you are given or do you interpret and add meaning when needed?

The third is your technique towards decision making. So do you prefer to tend to be more logical when making decisions or do you assess the people around you and the special circumstances of that situation?

And lastly, your preference of dealing with the world around you (MBTI). Do you prefer to get things done right away or leave open the option of new information? This is a great test to take if you are having trouble deciding on a career or if you have some time to kill and just want to discover a little more about yourself.

Another personality test to take would be the DiSC test, I personally know it as the color type test. I had to take this one in high school to learn where I fit in on a team of people. The DiSC was developed by Dr. William Marston, physiological psychologist. It helps to determine your different types of behaviors. There are four distinct behavior styles. They are Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

A Dominant personality type or green type as I knew it, is someone who is motivated by winning. They usually described as strong willed and self confident. They value competency, action, and aren't afraid of a challenge. This type does have one major fear and that is being seen as weak.

An Influential personality type or red, is often described as magnetic, enthusiastic, and trusting. They prioritize taking action and being able to collaborate. They are also motivated by social recognition and fear being ignored.

A Steady personality type or blue type, is motivated by opportunities of cooperation and being able to help. They are often described as calm, predictable, and patient. This personality type often fears change or the loss of stability (DiSC Profile).

Lastly, the Conscientious personality type or orange type is often motivated by the opportunity to gain knowledge and show off their skills. A person with this personality type is often described as cautious, diplomatic, and tactful. They often fear being wrong (DiSC Profile).

Every time I took this test I was a blue type. I highly encourage you to take this test to learn more about your personality and your behavioral habits.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
