After a much-needed winter break filled with delicious holiday food and lots of sleep, it’s time to get back on track for the start of a new semester. What better way to do this than with a list of ways that make sure you can start your semester off right?

1. Decide that you’ll be successful.

This is the most important tip on this list. Making sure that you are in the right mindset is extremely important because it ensures that you’re pumped and motivated to do well.

2. Write out some SMART goals.

A SMART goal is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. These kinds of goals are great for anyone who is detail-oriented because you’ll be following specific steps that allow you to track your progress, which will keep you motivated. This would be perfect for keeping track of how much you’ve studied for a certain class.

3. Utilize your syllabi

After you’ve received all of your syllabi from your professors, go through each one individually and write important due dates on your calendar as well as your planner. The more places they’re written down, the more you’re likely to remember them.

4. Meet with your professors

Along with utilizing your syllabi, you should also meet with your professors. Introduce yourself and let them know you look forward to being in their class. First impressions are everything and this will definitely leave a good impression on your professors whether you’re at a really big college or a smaller one.

5. Meet with your academic adviser

Meeting with your academic adviser could be very beneficial for you whether you’re declaring your major or sharing your SMART goals, they can help point you in the right direction for all your needs.

6. Buy some new school supplies.

Why not kick off the new semester in academic style with cute new stationary or your favorite pens? Buying what you need and maybe even splurging a little on what you want as well will motivate you to do well.

7. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule!

To make sure you’re maximizing your time this semester, it’s important to plan out certain activities, such as when you’ll study and when you’ll hang out with friends. Finding a balance between the two will help you feel in better control and less stressed.

8. Attend the Involvement Fair

As a freshman, I have a semester of experience under my belt and I can definitely share first hand how important it is to stay involved in things that interest you. Joining clubs and organizations that you’re interested in are great for your resume and also great for finding like minded people who could potentially become your friend.

9. Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself this semester is extremely important. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and eating right. Maybe even take some vitamins to help support your immune system. Take a Zumba class with a friend if your school offers it. Staying active will help you relieve stress as well as making sure you stay fit.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
