Finals week. It’s. Finally. Over. We fought hard to get those papers written, to ace those lab practicals and cram for those exams. Now that we’re entering into the long awaited break, here are some ways to ease yourself back into a life without all-nighters...well for the most part anyway.
1. Sleep
I think this should be obvious, but you never know. You just put your brain and your body through the worst week of its life with over-caffeination, two hours of sleep a night and either too much stress eating or not enough. So shut your blinds, turn off your phone, read a book for a bit and then let yourself drift off. This will allow your body to recover, your memory to improve and your productivity to increase.
2. Netflix It Up
After sleeping, Netflix is probably the best way to go. This is your chance to finally watch all your favorite shows without the guilt of the to-do list creeping in. All the self-condemnation is now non-existent. So go catch up on all the latest and greatest. Or maybe the favorite oldies. Whatever you want!
3. Make Yourself a Nutritious Meal
Now that you’re not in full-on panic mode, it’s time you treat your body to fuel that isn’t half cream and four espresso shots or a protein bar. Maybe try making a new recipe. Preferably one filled with vegetables and healthy carbs.
4. Go Do Something Outdoors
After spending 36 hours inside a classroom, dorm room or library, it’s probably time to step out into the sunshine. Go out and enjoy God’s creation. Try some swimming or tree climbing. Or if you’re like me, it’s a pickup game of basketball or volleyball that gets you outside of your air-conditioned home. Perhaps you’re the person who actually can slackline without falling, then you should probably do that because that’s pretty cool.
5. Call Your Parents
Maybe you’re the person who only sends a weekly text to let your parents know you’re alive or maybe you do a brief daily check in or, if you’re me, you call your mom to ask her to tell you that you are indeed capable of taking a test. Whatever it may be, you should still probably talk to your parents. Tell them you love them and appreciate everything they do. There’s always a reason to love the ones that raised you.
6. Buy Yourself a Treat
For me, that’s a coconut milk latte. For others, that means a pair of new shoes or tickets to that concert they’ve been wanting to go to. Do it, even if it’s only something small - it’s nice to treat yourself. Especially when you get through another year of school, then congratulations are most definitely in order.
7. Plan an Adventure with Friends
Maybe that means making your way to the beach to get fun pictures and a good tan. Or it’s time to try one of those Escape Rooms to test your detective skills. Or maybe you’re gonna put on an outdoor movie night with popcorn and watch from the comfort of (free) couches. The options are endless.
8. Have a Mini Dance Party With Yourself
This is something that everyone should absolutely do. Dancing relieves stress, it helps with balance and it's personal to your style. Turn up your favorite music, close the door and have at it.
9. Be Thankful
For me, that means opening my Bible and spending time with Jesus reminding myself of all that He has blessed me this last school year. For others that might mean making a list of what they're grateful for. No matter what, it’s a good practice to remember how privileged we each are in our own ways.
