What better way to honor #IloveUD month than to list all of the unique things that make this place so special? The University of Dayton has got Disney World beat for the happiest place on earth. The month of February is dedicated to celebrating the immeasurable joy that comes with being a member of the University of Dayton’s community. I mean we were ranked number six in happiest students for a reason. Although the list of incredible things the University has to offer could go on forever, there are a few things in particular that UD student’s just can’t seem to get enough of.
1. Monster Cookies
The only thing that can make being a UD student better is treating yourself to a monster cookie. The 15-minute wait for a warmed up cookie the size of your head with a double scoop of ice cream on top is definitely worth it. Seriously, there’s no better reward to a long day of studying than the sweet and savory treat that is a Monster cookie. It’s probably single handedly the reason UD students are the sixth happiest in the country.
2. Sunset Pictures
Stalk any UD student on Instagram and you’re bound to come across a picture of the sun setting over the Ghetto, the chapel, and heck even the science center. The sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking at all times of the year. Don’t believe me? Go sit on the benches at the top of Stuart hill and try to tell me it’s not the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen. Or just creep someone on Instagram, I guess.
3. Club Roesch
OK, maybe studying isn’t everyone’s favorite activity but the library is definitely one of the hottest spots on campus. Even if someone isn’t happy to be there you’re always greeted with a smile. Or maybe people just love to call it Club Roesch. Whatever the case is, the library is a key part of what makes UD so great.
4. Cousin Vinny’s
It’s probably a second choice to Domino’s, but it wouldn’t be Dayton without Cousin Vinny’s. Sure we’ve all tasted better pizza but it’s about more than that. It’s about the experience. And even if you won’t admit that you secretly love Vinny’s, you’ve got to admit you have a special place in your heart for the guy who stands on the corner of Evanston and Kiefaber selling it.
5. Timothy’s Bar & Grill
Does this one even need an explanation? Everyone has their fair share of Tim’s experiences. Good or bad, I promise it’s probably a story you’d like to hear.
6. “The Ghetto”
The student neighborhood, otherwise known as “the Ghetto” is what makes Dayton everything that it is. Community is everyone on this campus’s favorite word, and it is in “the Ghetto” where community is born. On these streets, life-lasting friendships are formed, a lot of things are lost and memories are born. Everyone hangs their sheet signs high and kicks it on their porch, flaunting the pride they have in being a Flyer.
7. Basketball Games
There is no shortage of Flyer pride at a UD basketball game. Red Scare is an incredible organization where all Flyers come together and put together an award winning student section to cheer on all teams, and it's always in full force at men’s basketball games. Who could forget the Cinderella story of 2014? Basketball gives this school character. And there’s nothing a true Flyer loves more than Archie Miller.
8. Saturday Afternoons
If you take a stroll on UD’s campus between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and five p.m., you will see a whole lot of jerseys, an unhealthy amount of empty natty cans, some bucket hats, and hundreds of students packed onto a few different laws celebrating the weekend. Sound uncomfortable? We wouldn’t rather have it any other way. Nothing beats a Saturday at the University of Dayton.
9. The Chapel
The Chapel is the ultimate symbol of the University. When you think about Dayton, you should envision the chapel. Beautifully renovated, the University of Dayton’s chapel is absolutely stunning. Us Flyers have a lot of things to be proud of, and even more to be thankful for, but the Chapel is definitely something that should be at the top of the list.
