I-95 runs from Houlton, Maine to Miami, Florida running along the east coast of the United States. It is one of the largest highways in the country and runs through numerous major cities. This is part three of a three part series of different places you can visit along I-95. If I-95 is part of your next road trip, check out some of these must see places!
North Carolina
One of the most well-known breweries in North Carolina, Koi Pond was the first craft brewery to open in Rocky Mount, NC. Founded by Eric Ghiloni, Koi Pond has about 10 beers they make year round, with additional seasonal beers offered. If you’re looking to take a break from driving, stop and get yourself a fresh brewed beer (unless you’re the driver in which case you’ll have to enjoy a soda and the atmosphere).
Airborne and Special Operations Museum
Found in Fayetteville, NC, the museum is owned and operated by the United States Army. Some of the exhibits you can visit include Early Airborne, World War II, Korea and Cold War, Vietnam, and Contingency Operations and Training. The exhibits show the history and development of the army and flight operations over the years. There are different ways to honor your loved ones that were part of the army, options for school field trips, and special events (the next one being human foosball!). Admission to the museum is free, however donations are encouraged.
South Carolina
This was by far one of my favorite stops on I-95. Found in Hamer, SC, South of the Border is literally the first location south of the North Carolina and South Carolina. It’s hard to miss since signs for the stop begin about a hundred miles back. South of the Border is a rest stop, campground, amusement park, and truck stop all mashed up into one. It’s most popular at night when the lights come on and the rides are open, but it’s also a fun stop for those looking at a touristy destination. If you’re traveling in an RV, there is a campground you can park in with a store that sells food on the grounds. Be sure to stop by and say hi to Pedro! A quick rest stop will turn into a few hours stay at South of the Border!
With a name like “Thieves Market”, one might be skeptical to stop here, but this market is one of the best antique shops around. Located in Florence, SC, the market is just a short drive off of I-95. There are hundreds of antique items available for sale ranging from furniture to knick-knacks. A nice place to stop if you’re interested in unique pieces!
Georgia
Located in historic Savannah, GA, River Street is home to numerous shops and restaurants and runs right along the Savannah Front River. Walk along the original cobblestone streets as you admire the classic brick buildings offering architecture unique to the area. It feels like you’ve taken a step back in time when you arrive in Savannah. There are so many sights to see that this could easily be a day trip for your travels.
Found almost on the border of Georgia and Florida, this restaurant is located in Kingsland, GA. Offering a wide variety of food ranging from burgers to pizza to salads and more, there is sure to be a meal to please everyone! An extension of Flynn’s bar in Plainville, MA, this neighborhood pub was started by “Grandpa Joe”. A great place to grab a bit if you’re looking for some comfort food and a homey feel.
Florida
Daytona International Speedway
Home to the famous Daytona 500 race, Daytona International Speedway found in Daytona Beach, FL, is a must see for all sports and racing lovers. There are daily guided tours for a small fee which take you behind the scenes of the race track. You are able to visit the gift shop and some parts of the racetrack for free which provides many amazing photo opportunities. You can purchase tickets to a race through their website or visit on a quieter day to get a different experience!
Located near Titusville, FL, the Kennedy Space Center is home to N.A.S.A. and the space program. For $50, you can enter the park and visit buildings that show the history and future of the space program. You can also go on a brief guided bus tour past the launch pads to the Apollo Center. In the Apollo Center, you will see the evolution of the Apollo program. For an extra $25, you can experience a more in depth tour of the space center grounds. There are numerous shows, iMax films, artifacts, games, and more to see while here. This is definitely a whole day trip if you plan on stopping.
Perhaps the most famous street in Miami Beach, FL, Ocean Drive is a short drive towards the coast off of I-95. Home to South Beach, Ocean Drive is known for its restaurants and shops, but especially for its nightlife. You will find a variety of things to do from renting a bike to ride along the beach to dinner in a five-star hotel. Ocean Drive has a unique history as being the sight of the shooting death of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. A popular tourist destination that’s also a hit with the locals!
And with that you have completed your trip down I-95! I hope you’ve enjoyed your stops along the way. Please feel free to pass on the information about these stops to your friends and family. As always, safe travels!
