The time is coming, my friends, New Year’s resolutions. We set insane expectations for ourselves every year, but inevitably let the gym membership expire and stop saving money by March. Maybe we should make a resolution to stop making this kind of resolution. The only thing we can really expect in the coming year is another 365 days of ups and downs, but there are still some vows we can make in 2016 to ensure we give this year the best possible version of ourselves.
1. Learn to listen.
2016 is an election year, meaning you will be bombarded with opinions by everyone from esteemed political analysts to our great uncle who thinks he is an esteemed political analyst. One of our resolutions should be to learn to listen to the views of others even if we disagree.
2. Appreciate those around you.
If you care about someone, let them know. Time is fleeting and circumstances can change in an instant, so make a vow to yourself to not take a single moment for granted. Thank your mom when she does your laundry. Tell a friend that you are grateful for them.
3. Forgive yourself.
We hold grudges against ourselves more than anyone else could dream of. Make 2016 the year to finally let those go.
4. Get moving.
No, this does not have to be the traditional “I want to lose twenty pounds” resolution. Take things at your own pace, whether it be walking a lap around your neighborhood or riding a bike instead of driving. Increasing your exercise each week has physical and emotional benefits, so make a vow to spend a little bit less time on the couch this year.
5. Eat more green stuff.
Fill your plate with more broccoli and less dessert. In the age of Pinterest, there are endless recipes for healthy snack alternatives. Check some of those out next time you have a craving.
6. Read a book.
Take the time to get lost in the alternate universe of literature. Find a genre you are interested in, learn new words, and lose yourself for a little while.
7. Make a new friend.
Reach out to a coworker or classmate that you have never talked to before. Invite them for a cup of coffee and get to know them. We may live in a generation of “keeping our circle small” but, really, who couldn’t use another friend?
8. Pay it forward at least once.
Anonymously pay for someone’s groceries or meal. No price can be put on the joy someone feels through this small act of kindness done by a stranger.
9. Do not take life too seriously.
Laugh more. Go on vacation. Treat yourself. The biggest thing we can do this year is just enjoy the life we have been given. Turn all of the complaints of last year into words of gratitude.
