The 90's have made a remarkable comeback - scrunchies are no longer reserved for themed parties, high-waisted jeans in typical Kelly Kapowski fashion are seen on the reg and it's 100% socially acceptable to blast N*SYNC and Britney Spears from your car as you drive down South Main. So when the Backstreet Boys 'I Want It That Way' music video showed up on my YouTube home page, I couldn't resist. I quickly realized that it is one of the most underrated works of art of all time. And here's why:
1. The Slow-Mo
Because nothing is more mesmerizing than watching the Backstreet Boys move through a deserted airport at the pace of a snail, leaving us in awe of their grace.
2. The Jet
It has their name across it in 10 foot lettering. Need I say more?
3. The Dramatic Looks
I think we can all appreciate a good dramatic face when we see one - the jaw tension, the squinted eyes, the looking down at a 45 degree angle...these are outstanding.
4. Nick Carter
He originated the hairstyle that later became popularized by many a 90's heartthrob. He is also Aaron Carter's older (yet just as appealing) sibling.
5. The Zooms
Below you will find an actual clip from the music video. I think that this one can speak for itself.
6. The Outfits
No one will ever be able to forget the image of these 5 men, all dressed in white, as if they were angels sent from above. Watch them glow.
7. The Gestures
They obviously wanted us to really understand what was meant with the line "don't wanna hear you." So considerate.
8. This
It's so...abstract. I can't explain it, but know I like it.
And last but not least...
9. The Choreography
They thrust their arms and swivel their hips with such passion...moves me to tears nearly every time.
Above all, the "I Want It That Way" music video shows us what true artistry really is.
