1. Listen to others with a devoted ear...
…And react! Interior and exterior distractions constantly get the best of us, but nothing or no one deserves your attention more than the person in front of you. They want nothing more than to communicate with you, so give them the same devotion. Whether they need comfort, a favor, or someone to laugh at their joke, do not be distracted by your own wants. Listen, respond, and give them that sprinkle of happiness in their day.
2. Opt out of speaking negatively.
Honestly, is there a point? There are only two results that come from this. Negative talk makes others upset, and the more you do it, the more of a habit it becomes. I have been caught in the trap, and I am sure you have too. Maybe speaking positively will encourage you to think more positively as well. Don’t forget that there is often someone out there who has the situation worse off than you do. Step back to gain a better perspective.
3. Be selfless.
This is a task that we must work on every day. I suggest we write these two words on post-it notes and put them on our mirrors so that we may see them every morning. Maybe you will make 2016 the happiest year for someone else.

4. Forgive others.
You know how difficult navigating life is. Do not get angry at someone because their life is being just as difficult. No matter how crucial the choice, and no matter how large the mistake, life is finite and fast. Move with it, and you will find growth within yourself.
5. Forgive yourself.
This task, for some unthinkable reason, is a challenge that can take a lifetime to conquer. A bottomless pit of shame fuels your regret until love intervenes. Someone who loves you will mend those wounds – I promise. If you cannot see this someone in your life, be that person who loves another. If you can do this, know that you are amazing. Know that you and love are more than your shame.

6. Do not waste your time.
Life is finite, but you are infinite. You are significant. Find what makes you happy and use that to make others happy. If you are like me and lack motivation and bravery, take that first step with me this year. We can still binge watch Netflix, but we can no longer sit around being afraid of not becoming who we want to be.
7. Bypass your fears...
…I promise you they will be left behind.

8. Live simply.
Interpret this phrase however you want, or rather, however you need. I found these words during a time when I warped and inflated every issue in my life into something that is wasn’t. Drama, hatred and grudges make life more complicated than it should be. Live simply with forgiveness; live simply without judgement of others; live simply with love.

With all of the sincerity I can muster, have the happiest new year.
