A few weeks ago, I wrote an article highlighting 5 places to volunteer in Platteville, Wisconsin, and I was amazed by the outpouring of positive responses. Many readers reached out to me with inspiring comments and provided suggestions for additions to the list. To me, that shows just how important service is to the Platteville community. So, I decided to compile another list.

Here are 8 more ways to give back and do good in Platteville:

1. Platteville Community Arboretum

The Platteville Community Arboretum is a non-profit, community based arboretum created for the purposes of education, recreation, and conservation. The PCA manages part of the Rountree Branch Trail using volunteer power. If you want to positively impact the environment, check out the PCA's website to learn more about volunteer days.

2. Friends of Platteville Municipal Auditorium

Are you interested in drama, music, dance, and live events? If so, volunteer with the Friends of Platteville Municipal Auditorium. The group supports and encourages the usage of the auditorium in City Hall of Platteville. Here are just a few ways you can get involved: acting; directing; web and poster design; volunteer for fundraisers; backstage crew; set-building/construction; sound crew; grant writing; and more!

3. Platteville Senior Center

Want a volunteer opportunity that really makes an impact? Spend some time helping out at the Platteville Senior Center, which offers social, recreational, educational and health-related services and activities for those over age 50. Volunteer opportunities vary, but may include chances to be a bus assistant, gardener, guest presenter, or computer tutor.

4. Rountree Gallery

Rountree Gallery is a community run, not-for-profit gallery that provides exhibit space for artists in Platteville and surrounding communities. Stop in to view the creative works of area artists and browse the items for sale. Or, if you are an artist, contact Rountree Gallery for more information on exhibiting artwork, selling items in the Gallery Shop, or instructing classes.

5. Family Advocates, Inc.

Family Advocates is a nonprofit organization providing services for victims of sexual assault and family/partner abuse, including a 24-hour shelter and call center. Volunteers provide many hours of service to clients staying in the shelter, attending support groups, or needing crisis intervention. For information on how to support the mission of Family Advocates, visit their website.

6. Platteville Public Library

Donate your time and talent to help support the Platteville Public Library. There are many ways to volunteer with the library, from serving on the Library Board, to shelving books, to gardening. Visit their website for more information.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
