Let's face it. The 2016 presidential election has become a source of entertainment around the globe. Donald Trump -- if you haven't heard -- is running for the GOP nomination. I don't know about you, but every time I watch him, or hear what he has to say, I cannot help but laugh at his ridiculousness. I also cannot wait until he's as obsolete as... Sanjaya Malakar! Who's Sanjaya, you ask? Well, he was only the front runner on the show, "American Idol," during season six, which aired all the way back in 2007! Here are just a few of the ways the two of them are alike.
1. The hair.
Trump may have that combover down pat (no pun intended), but let's not forget that Sanjaya made the faux-hawk famous back in 2007.
2. The incredible following.
Sanjaya Malakar, albeit one of the worst to ever perform on the "American Idol" finalist stage, amassed one of the largest followings on the show. Mind you, this was before popular use of social media. Trump, on the other hand, has millions and millions of followers on every social media platform that exists today, whether that be for entertainment or because people truly support him, we are uncertain. Let's hope it's the former.
3. The whole "vote for the worst" controversy.
A conspiracy exists that Sanjaya's following was merely a setup in a plot to ruin "American Idol" and Simon Cowell's grip on television in the United States. It's possible Trump took a hint from Sanjaya's ways. Many theories also exist in today's election, some claiming that Trump's platform is a scheme to make the Democrats look better and the GOP foolish so that more people support the Democrats until younger Republicans take office, who will actually work to make a change.
4. They both live in each their own universe.
Towards the end of season six, when Sanjaya was voted off the show, Simon Cowell made a point to remind the audience that Sanjaya lives in his own little idealistic world. I'm not sure about you, but seven years later, "little idealistic worlds" seem to be quite prevalent when it comes to Donald Trump and his plans to "make America great again" by imposing policies that violate freedoms of thousands of American citizens. It may not be the same universe that these two guys live in because if it was, we may just see Donald Trump sporting a faux-hawk rather than that comb-over-toupee-cat sort of thing.
5. They have made women cry.
Although it may be out of love, Sanjaya had quite the knack for making girls cry over him. Seven years later, women are crying over Trump's dehumanization of them (have I also mentioned that he dehumanizes pretty much everyone except for white, wealthy males). Need I say more?
6. They sure do dare to be different.
I don't believe anything more needs to be said than that.
7. They are both obsolete.
I cannot wait for the day when my kids ask me if this election really happened the way that it did, just as I take pleasure in throwing it back to our good, old friend Sanjaya every once and a while.
8. They make for damn good entertainment.
And you cannot get more American than that.
